Example

Read one after the other, the differences blur — by the time you reach the second, you have half-forgotten the phrasing of the first. So she sets them in parallel columns, line for line: Fitzgerald on the left, Fagles on the right, the Greek across the top. Now the divergences are simultaneous. Where one line is terse and its neighbor ornate, the two sit on the same row and the choice becomes a visible fork rather than a vague impression.

How it works

The mechanism's core is the viewing field: two or more panes, columns, or panels laid out so corresponding parts line up and the eye can move between them at low cost.
