A Paired Case Comparison holds two (or a few) real, matched cases in an explicit frame so a relation between them can be inferred — most often a candidate cause, a mechanism, or a consequence. Its defining feature is inference between equals: neither case is a reference standard, and neither is a manufactured teaching example; both are things that actually happened, chosen to be alike in most respects and to differ on the factor of interest, so that whatever else differs points at that factor. The frame — why these two belong together, and on what dimension — is what keeps the pairing an argument rather than an anecdote.
Example¶
Two neighboring mid-sized towns, demographically and economically alike, adopted curbside recycling in the same year; one made it opt-out and the other opt-in. Three years on, their diversion rates differ sharply. An analyst pairs them precisely because they are so similar — same climate, same waste hauler, same rough income profile, differing mainly on the opt-out/opt-in default. Framed that way, a natural approximation of Mill's method of difference,[n1] the gap in diversion rates can be read as evidence about default effects rather than about wealth or geography.
The analyst is careful to keep each town's context visible — one also ran a school-outreach campaign that year — because an unnoticed difference is exactly what would sink the inference. The output is not a verdict but a well-supported hypothesis: defaults appear to move recycling behavior, strong enough to test further.
How it works¶
The method turns on matching and framing. Cases are selected to be similar on everything thought to matter except the factor of interest — a most-similar-systems logic — and the frame states that selection openly: here is why these two are comparable, here is the dimension we are reading. Each case's context is preserved so that rival explanations — the confounds a two-case comparison is always vulnerable to — stay visible and can be argued down. The output is an inferred relation held with the humility two cases warrant. Unlike a benchmark, it names no yardstick; unlike a teaching pair, its cases are found in the world, not built to isolate a definition.
Tuning parameters¶
- Case similarity — how tightly matched the cases are. Closer matches strengthen the inference but are harder to find; looser matches are available but admit more confounds.
- Number of cases — two sharpens a single contrast; a third or fourth guards against a fluke at the cost of matching difficulty.
- Frame strength — how firmly the comparison dimension is fixed. A strong frame focuses the inference; too strong a frame suppresses a rival reading the cases actually support.
- Context depth — how much of each case's background is carried, trading fairness against clutter.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is approximating a natural experiment where a real one is impossible: a well-matched pair can make a causal-looking relation legible from evidence that already exists.
Its failure mode is confounding by unmatched difference — the two cases differ on something besides the factor of interest, and the inference silently rides on it. Selecting cases on the outcome — picking the pair because they already show the contrast you expect — is the classic misuse, and it manufactures the finding. The guard is to state the match and its known imperfections openly and to treat the inferred relation as a hypothesis strong enough to test further, not a proof.
