Before/After View¶

Shows an earlier and later state of the same subject together so change, continuity, deterioration, or improvement becomes visible.
A Before/After View places two states of the same subject — an earlier one and a later one — in a single frame, registered so tightly that elapsed time is the only thing that has changed. Its defining move is temporal, not spatial: it does not set two different things beside each other, it sets a thing beside its former self, and holds every other condition constant so that whatever differs between the two captures reads as change. Where a generic comparison asks "how do these differ?", the Before/After View asks the narrower, sharper question "what did time do to this?" — and answers it by making the delta, rather than either state alone, the object of attention.
Example¶
A small land trust has spent five years restoring an eroded streambank — planting willows, re-grading the channel, fencing out cattle. Donors want to know whether it worked, and a paragraph of prose does not settle it. So the trust uses repeat photography: it returns to the exact vantage point of a photo taken on the first day of work and re-shoots it, matching the lens, the season, the time of day, and the water level as closely as it can. The two frames go up together. Aligned, they are unarguable in a way neither is alone — the first a raw bank of bare clay, the second, from the identical angle, a narrowed channel screened by five-foot willows.
The alignment is the whole job. A photo taken from ten feet left, in a different season, would let a skeptic attribute the greenery to a wet year rather than the work. Because only time varies, the change reads as the restoration's, and the paired frame becomes the centerpiece of the next grant renewal.
How it works¶
The mechanism lives or dies on registration. An earlier state is fixed as the baseline — the reference the later state is read against — and a temporal-alignment rule holds every non-time variable constant between the two captures: same vantage, same instrument, same conditions, same framing. Intermediate states may be added to turn a two-point view into a short time-series, but the discipline is unchanged: move only the clock. What the view deliberately does not do is arrange several distinct items in one field for cross-comparison; it carries one subject through time.
Tuning parameters¶
- Interval length — how far apart the two captures sit. Longer intervals make slow change legible but let more confounds accumulate; shorter ones isolate a single intervention.
- Alignment tolerance — how strictly the non-time conditions are matched. Tight matching makes the delta trustworthy; loose matching is cheaper but invites the "it was just a good year" objection.
- Number of intermediate states — a bare before/after pair versus a stepped series. More steps reveal the trajectory — steady or sudden — at the cost of clutter.
- What is held constant — the choice of which variables to freeze. Freeze the wrong ones and the comparison silently drifts.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is defeating slow, ambient change that no single snapshot reveals — the erosion, decay, or improvement people stop seeing because they adjust to it as it happens, the shifting-baseline problem.[n1] A registered before/after re-anchors the baseline and makes the accumulated drift undeniable.
Its failure mode is confounding: because the format so strongly implies the intervention caused the change, it quietly absorbs every other thing that changed in the interval. The classic misuse is the cherry-picked before/after — matched not for fairness but for maximum contrast, with lighting, angle, or timing shifted to flatter the "after." The guarding discipline is to match conditions honestly and to record the interval and any co-occurring changes alongside the pair, so a viewer can see what else might explain the delta.
How it implements the components¶

It does not build a spatial field for several distinct, co-present items — adjacency_structure — that is Side-by-Side Comparison Display's work; the Before/After View aligns one subject across two times rather than arranging different items in one view.

The Before/After View is the temporal special case of juxtaposition. When both time and several distinct items vary at once, neither this nor a plain side-by-side is enough on its own, and the comparison needs an explicit frame to keep the two axes from being confused for each other.
