Side-Swap Test¶
Diagnostic swap test — instantiates Directed Asymmetry Mapping and Calibration
Swaps the two sides of a relation and asks whether the arrangement still reads as acceptable — the fastest way to expose an asymmetry that only survives because no one pictures it reversed.
The Side-Swap Test is the archetype's sharpest hand tool: take a rule, clause, or arrangement, mentally exchange the two parties, and ask whether it still reads the same. Its whole force is the counterfactual — most hidden asymmetries survive precisely because everyone imagines them from one fixed vantage, and swapping the sides breaks that spell in a sentence. Where the Directed Relation Matrix maps which way a relation points, the swap test stress-tests a specific treatment for a one-way bias, and it doubles as a probe for strategic exploitation — a party that authors an "either-side" rule it will only ever be on the favourable side of stands exposed the moment the sides are flipped.
Example¶
A city housing office is vetting a standard lease clause: "Either party terminating the lease early forfeits two months' rent." On its face it is scrupulously symmetric — "either party." Run the swap. If the tenant breaks the lease, they lose two months' rent; fine, that is how it is always used. Now swap: if the landlord terminates early — to renovate and re-let at a higher rate — do they hand the tenant two months' rent? In practice the clause is drafted and enforced so that only the tenant ever pays it; reversed, it reads absurd, because landlords are never on the paying side.
That one flip converts a "neutral" clause into what it actually is: a one-way penalty in symmetric clothing, written by the side that will only ever collect it. The office does not need a study to see it — the swap is the finding. The clause is sent back to be made genuinely reciprocal or, if the roles really do differ, re-drafted so the difference is stated openly rather than smuggled in under "either party."
How it works¶
- Fix the treatment, exchange the actors. Hold the rule constant and put each side in the other's position, changing nothing else, so any change in how it reads is attributable purely to who is where.
- Read the delta. If the arrangement now feels unacceptable, absurd, or is simply never enforced that way, the symmetry was doing concealing work.
- Ask who wrote it and who collects. When the swap stings only one side, check whether that side authored or benefits from the "neutral" framing — the tell of an asymmetry engineered to look even-handed.
Tuning parameters¶
- Swap grain — exchange whole parties, or just one attribute at a time (power, information, exit option). Attribute-level swaps isolate which difference is doing the work; whole-party swaps are faster but blunter.
- What is held fixed — everything except the two sides, ideally. Sloppy swaps that also change the stakes prove nothing; the cleaner the ceteris-paribus, the more the result means.
- Acceptability lens — whose standard judges the swapped version (a neutral third party, the weaker side, the law). Different lenses catch different one-way rules.
- Scope of application — whether the swap is applied to every rule or only to ones already suspected, which trades coverage against effort.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is speed and vividness: it needs no data, exposes concealed one-way treatment in a single move, and gives a team a shared, hard-to-unsee image. It is the practical cousin of judging an arrangement from behind a veil of ignorance — deciding as if you did not know which side you would land on.[n1]
Its failure modes matter. A clean swap-pass is not proof of fairness: some asymmetries should survive the flip because the difference between the sides is real (a clinician's duty to a patient, an adult's to a child), and treating those as symmetric would be its own error. The test can also be rigged — swap on a carefully chosen irrelevant attribute to "prove" whatever was already wanted — which is the run-it-backwards move in miniature. And it flags a problem without sizing or resolving it. The discipline is to treat a failed swap as a prompt, not a verdict, and pass it to the Relevant Asymmetry Test to decide whether the exposed difference is one that legitimately licenses different treatment.
How it implements the components¶
The Side-Swap Test fills the archetype's counterfactual-probe slots — what a quick diagnostic, not a map or a valuation, can fill:
side_swap_counterfactual— it is the operationalized swap: exchange the sides and read whether the arrangement still holds.strategic_exploitation_probe— the same flip is the fastest test for a rule engineered to look neutral while favouring its author, exposing deliberate one-way design.
It does not decide whether a revealed difference actually warrants different treatment (relevant_difference_warrant → Relevant Asymmetry Test), scan a whole system for standing false-symmetry errors (false_symmetry_guard → False Symmetry Review), or keep the durable record of which asymmetries were judged acceptable (that register is the Asymmetry Exception Register).

Form Classification¶
Form family: Experiment, Test & Rehearsal
Rationale: Side-Swap Test operates as an active test, trial, simulation, drill, or rehearsal that generates evidence through a deliberate attempt or perturbation because it swaps the two sides of a relation and asks whether the arrangement still reads as acceptable — the fastest way to expose an asymmetry that only survives because no one pictures it reversed.
Independent corroboration: The frozen evidence defines Side-Swap Test as 'Swaps the two sides of a relation and asks whether the arrangement still reads as acceptable — the fastest way to expose an asymmetry that only survives because no one pictures it reversed', so its operative form is Experiment, Test & Rehearsal.
Nearest alternative: Assessment, Review & Assurance — Side-Swap Test includes features of a bounded evaluation of existing evidence or work that produces a finding or disposition, but its defining operation is an active test, trial, simulation, drill, or rehearsal that generates evidence through a deliberate attempt or perturbation.
Review outcome: Independent reviewer agreement; medium confidence.
Origin Attribution¶
Primary origin: Philosophy
Origin pattern: Convergent development
Present-day reach: Universal
Rationale: Reversing the parties to test whether a judgment survives role exchange is a philosophical impartiality operation. The impartiality and original-position traditions explicitly remove or reverse identity-dependent advantage; psychology explains bias exposed by the test.
Related originating lineages:
- Cognitive Science — Cognitive-science research on representation, learning, and recall supplies a parallel or contributing lineage for the mechanism's defining operation: swaps the two sides of a relation and asks whether the arrangement still reads as acceptable — the fastest way to expose an asymmetry that only survives because no one pictures it….
- Law & Governance — Equal protection and reciprocity reasoning expose one-sided rules.
- Psychology — Perspective taking reveals motivated asymmetry and in-group privilege.
- Rhetoric — Role reversal is a compact argumentative device against special pleading.
Review resolution: The blind reviewers disagree on primary lineage (philosophy versus psychology). Authoritative or primary research supports philosophy as the best historical origin: Reversing the parties to test whether a judgment survives role exchange is a philosophical impartiality operation. The impartiality and original-position traditions explicitly remove or reverse identity-dependent advantage; psychology explains bias exposed by the test. The cited Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, Impartiality; Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, Original Position directly supports the mechanism's defining operation. All independently supported contributing domains are retained without an arbitrary cap. origin_mode=convergent records lineage, while domain_reach=universal records later applicability separately from provenance.
Encyclopedia synthesis: The exact catalogued form synthesizes established practice rather than reproducing a single standard historical label.
Review outcome: Researched adjudication after independent review; high confidence.

Notes¶
A passed swap and a failed swap both underdetermine the verdict. Failing means "look here"; passing means "no obvious one-way bias on the attribute you swapped" — not "fair." The test's job is to surface candidate asymmetries cheaply; deciding which of them are warranted is deliberately handed to the Relevant Asymmetry Test, so that a vivid intuition never gets mistaken for a justification.
[n1] Veil of ignorance (Rawls) — a fairness heuristic: choose the arrangement you would accept without knowing which side of it you will occupy. The side-swap is the on-the-spot version, forcing the same not-knowing-which-side stance onto a concrete rule. ↩
