Comparative evaluation — instantiates Informal Fallacy Diagnosis and Repair
Scores a real option against the best achievable alternative instead of an idealized one, exposing rejections driven by the nirvana fallacy.
An argument can reject a perfectly good option for the wrong reason: it measures the option against a fantasy. Feasible Alternative Comparison fixes the comparison class an argument uses to judge a proposal, insisting that a real option be scored against the best achievable alternative rather than against a flawless one that does not and cannot exist. Its defining commitment is a normative one — that "good enough relative to what we can actually do" is the right standard, not "perfect in the abstract." When an argument dismisses a proposal because it "won't solve everything" or "still has problems," this mechanism replaces the idealized benchmark with the best feasible rival and re-runs the judgment. It works within a given set of options; its whole leverage is the choice of yardstick.
Example¶
A city council is debating a protected bike-lane plan for a dangerous corridor. An opponent argues: "This plan won't eliminate cycling accidents — people will still get hurt — so it doesn't solve the problem and we shouldn't fund it." Feasible Alternative Comparison is the move that answers this. It refuses the implied benchmark (a corridor with zero accidents, which no achievable design delivers) and instead sets the comparison class to the real alternatives on the table: the status quo of an unprotected shared lane, a paint-only bike lane, and the protected lane under debate. It then commits explicitly to the operative standard — reduce harm relative to the best option we can actually build, not achieve a perfect corridor.
Scored that way, the plan is not judged a failure for leaving residual risk; it is judged against the status quo and the paint-only option, both of which it beats on the projected-injury measure. The output is a corrected comparison: the plan is the best feasible alternative for this corridor, and the objection was rejecting it against an idealized standard nothing could meet. The council can now argue about the real trade-off between the three buildable options.
How it works¶
- Name the operative standard. State the norm the comparison will use — "best achievable," not "perfect" — and record it, so the yardstick is explicit and contestable rather than smuggled in.
- Set the comparison class to real options. Replace any idealized benchmark with the concrete, buildable alternatives, including the status quo, and record that set as the field the proposal is judged against.
- Score against the best feasible rival. Compare the proposal to the strongest achievable alternative on the relevant measure, not to a hypothetical that clears every objection at once.
- Re-run the verdict. Report whether the proposal still loses once the comparison class is corrected; often a "failure" against perfection becomes a win against the feasible field.
Tuning parameters¶
- Feasibility bar — how strict the test for "achievable" is. A tight bar keeps only genuinely buildable options in the class but risks excluding an ambitious one worth stretching for; a loose bar readmits near-fantasies.
- Standard stringency — where "good enough" sits relative to the best feasible rival. Setting it high demands the proposal clearly dominate; setting it low passes any option that merely beats the status quo.
- Comparison-class breadth — how many real alternatives enter the field. A wide class guards against a rigged two-way contest but costs effort to assemble and score.
- Measure selection — which dimension the options are scored on. The choice of measure can decide the verdict, so it must be justified rather than picked to favor a preferred option.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is exposing the nirvana fallacy — rejecting a real, workable option because it falls short of an unattainable ideal, a move the economist Harold Demsetz criticized as comparing actual arrangements against an imaginary perfect one.[n1] By pinning the standard to the best achievable alternative, it rescues good-enough options from being talked down by perfectionism and keeps a decision anchored to what can actually be done.
Its failure mode is the opposite drift: using "best feasible" to launder a genuinely poor option, or defining "feasible" so narrowly that a better achievable alternative is ruled out of the comparison class before scoring begins. The classic misuse is false pragmatism — declaring an ambitious-but-reachable option "infeasible" so that a weak incumbent wins by default. The guarding discipline is to defend the feasibility bar and the operative standard out loud: the comparison is only honest if the set of "achievable" options is set before the preferred answer is known, and if the standard is not quietly lowered to let the favored option through.
