Example

During an earthquake, a message races through a regional group chat: "The main dam has failed — evacuate downstream now." It has been forwarded thousands of times, and each forward makes the next reader more certain, because surely this many people wouldn't be sharing it if it weren't true. The messaging app attaches a notice to the message: a "forwarded many times" flag on its provenance, a line of verified context — "The dam authority reports no failure as of 14:20; official status here" — and a recommended action: "Follow official emergency channels; do not forward unverified evacuation orders." A "check before you share" prompt appears when a user tries to pass it on.

A panic evacuation — dangerous in its own right — is dampened without anyone having to already know the rumor was false.

How it works

  • Detect the fast-spreading claim. Trigger on forward velocity, a keyword pattern, or a fact-checker flag, so the notice attaches to claims that are actually cascading.
  • State verification status plainly. Say what is known, what is unverified, and the source and time of the check — not a verdict handed down, but a status a reader can act on.
  • Expose provenance. Surface how far and how the claim was forwarded, so "many people sent this" reads as forwarding depth, not independent corroboration.
  • Insert a share-time friction. Prompt the user to confirm — or to read the context — before resharing, so the reflexive forward gets one beat of pause.

Tuning parameters

  • Trigger sensitivity — how fast or how flagged a claim must be before a notice attaches. Looser catches more rumors but risks labeling ordinary messages.
  • Notice strength — a soft context line versus a full interstitial the user must dismiss. Stronger interrupts more but feels more paternalistic.
  • Action specificity — generic ("verify before sharing") versus concrete ("follow this official channel"). Specific guidance helps more but requires a trustworthy source to point at.
