Warning Label Redesign¶
Procedure — instantiates Sign–Meaning Alignment
Revises warning language, icons, salience, placement, and examples when hazard interpretation evidence shows mismatch.
A Warning Label Redesign corrects a deployed hazard sign — its wording, icon, signal word, salience, contrast, placement, and action instruction — after comprehension evidence shows that people do not grasp the hazard or the required behavior. Its defining move, and what separates it from its nearest sibling, is that it operates correctively on a live sign under an explicit revision rule: the trigger is field evidence of a misunderstood hazard, the action is a change to the sign's form and support, and the severity of the misunderstanding governs how urgently the change is made. It does not screen a proposed name before adoption, and it does not itself run the comprehension test — it consumes that evidence and turns it into a revised, retested sign.
Example¶
A portable generator's engine housing carries "WARNING: Exhaust contains carbon monoxide" with a small icon. Comprehension evidence — from a field comprehension test — shows the problem: users still run the generator in a garage or beside an open window, reading the label as generic exhaust caution rather than lethal indoors within minutes. The wording is technically accurate and behaviorally inert.
The redesign applies the revision rule — misunderstanding of a lethal hazard forces immediate correction — and reworks the sign's form: a DANGER signal word replacing "WARNING," a pictogram showing a person, a house, and a slash, high-contrast red, and the label moved to the pull-cord where the eye lands at the moment of use. It adds interpretive support that carries the required behavior in plain, directive language: "Using inside a home, garage, or shed CAN KILL YOU IN MINUTES. NEVER run indoors." The change and its rationale are recorded, and the sign is retested — because a redesign that isn't re-measured is just a guess with better typography.
How it works¶
- Consume the comprehension evidence. Start from field data showing that people misread the hazard or fail to take the required action; the redesign does not generate this itself.
- Apply the revision rule. Use a severity-graded rule that links the kind of misunderstanding to the kind and urgency of change — cosmetic tolerance for low-stakes confusion, immediate action for a misread lethal hazard, up to retiring or replacing the sign.
- Rework the whole form together. Adjust signal word, icon, contrast, size, and placement as a set, since salience and wording interact.
- Add behavior-carrying support and retest. Replace hazard-naming with directive action language and examples, then re-measure comprehension against the new form.
Tuning parameters¶
- Revision trigger threshold — how much and what kind of misunderstanding forces a change. Lethal-hazard misreads may demand immediate action where a minor ambiguity is tolerated.
- Salience budget — how much visual weight, contrast, and size to spend. More salience fights inattention but, spent everywhere, produces warning overload where nothing stands out.
- Directiveness — hazard-naming ("contains CO") vs. action-directive ("never run indoors"). Directive language drives behavior but the instructed action must be feasible.
- Signal-word tier — DANGER vs. WARNING vs. CAUTION in a fixed hierarchy. Over-escalating dilutes the top tier for the hazards that truly warrant it.
- Placement and format — where the label sits relative to the point of use. A warning at the hazard beats one buried in a manual.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is converting "we told them" into "they understood and acted," by attacking form, salience, and action language together rather than tweaking a word. Its honest limit is structural: a warning is the weakest safety control. In the hierarchy of controls,[n1] warnings sit near the bottom, below eliminating, substituting, or engineering out the hazard — and teams reach for a label precisely because it is cheap, using a clearer sign to close a case that needed an interlock or a shutoff sensor. The other failure is habituation: escalate every warning and none of them are seen. The classic misuse is declaring a hazard "addressed" because the label was improved. The guarding discipline is to treat label redesign as a last resort after the stronger controls have been considered, and to re-run the comprehension test on the new form rather than assuming the new wording works.
