Context Frame Header¶
Framing artifact — instantiates Pragmatic Context Alignment
Bolts a short interpretive frame onto the front of a message — who is speaking, in what role, through what channel, for what purpose — so the whole thing is read through the intended lens.
Readers decide how to read something in the first few seconds, and everything after is interpreted through that early frame. Context Frame Header exploits this: it prepends a compact block that fixes the lens before the content arrives — the speaker and their role, the intended audience, the purpose (decision / FYI / directive), the register, and often the channel it belongs in. Its defining move is front-loading the frame as attached text: not auditing what the reader knows, not testing whether they got it, but asserting up front the situated reading the body should be given. A message that could be taken as an order, a suggestion, or a vent is disambiguated by three words at the top before the ambiguity can take hold.
Example¶
An engineering lead drops a long message into a busy team channel describing problems with the current on-call rotation. Without a frame, half the team reads it as a decision already made and starts rearranging their week; the other half reads it as venting and ignores it. She adds a Context Frame Header: [FYI — thinking out loud, NOT a decision · from me as lead · async, no action needed before Monday]. The same body now lands correctly — nobody reshuffles their schedule, and the people with opinions know Monday is when input matters.
The header is doing bottom-line-up-front work: it states the interpretive frame before the reasoning,[n1] and it flags the channel's affordances (this is async chat, so no live back-and-forth and no urgency implied by the medium). What changes is not the content but the lens — and with the lens fixed, the body's intended situated meaning survives a fast, distracted read.
How it works¶
- Name the anchors that set the frame. Speaker, role, audience, purpose, and time window — the handful that decide how the body should be taken.
- Declare the message type. Decision / proposal / FYI / directive / request — the single label that most changes uptake.
- Flag the channel fit. Note where the message lives and what that medium implies (async vs. live, ephemeral vs. of-record) so the channel's own signals aren't misread.
- Keep it skimmable and first. The header only works if it is read before the body; length defeats it.
Tuning parameters¶
- Header verbosity — a three-token tag versus a two-line preamble. Longer frames disambiguate more but get skipped, which is worse than no header.
- Frame dimensions — which anchors to include (role, purpose, urgency, register). Add only the ones whose absence would flip the reading.
- Salience of the type label — how loudly the decision/FYI/directive tag is marked. Loud labels prevent the most damaging misread but can feel heavy-handed on routine notes.
- Channel-fit emphasis — how much the header leans on stating medium norms versus assuming them; state them when the message is likely to be forwarded off-channel.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is speed and cheapness: one skimmable block converts a message that invites misreading into one that pre-commits its own frame, and it is especially powerful on fast channels where readers won't slow down to infer the frame themselves. The bottom-line-up-front discipline it borrows is exactly this — put the frame and the punchline before the supporting detail.[n1]
Its failure mode is a header that lies about the body, or one that goes stale: a frame stapled on out of habit ("FYI") over content that actually demands action mis-cues the reader worse than no header, because they trust the label. The classic misuse is using the frame to soften something the body doesn't earn — tagging a real directive as "just a thought" to dodge accountability. The guarding discipline is to write the header last, after the body is final, and make it describe what the message actually is.

It does not build the shared_background_model behind those anchors — auditing what the audience already knows is Common Ground Checklist; and it does not declare a message's context_shift_boundary or implicit_action_requirement, which are Scope and Audience Note's job.
