Blind Interpretation Critique¶
Protocol — instantiates Representational Reduction and Formal Abstraction
Elicits source-blind readings before revealing the brief and compares interpretation range with intent.
An abstract work can feel resolved to the person who made it and mean nothing to anyone else — because the maker reads it through the source they started from, and the viewer has no such privilege. Blind Interpretation Critique turns that asymmetry into a measurement. Fresh viewers are shown the composition with no title, no source image, and no artist statement; they say what they notice, what it feels like, and what they think it is about; only after those readings are on the record is the intended reading revealed. The gap between what viewers perceived and what the brief intended is the evidence. Its defining move is to treat the uninformed viewer as the instrument and to withhold the source deliberately, so that recognition cannot be smuggled in by context — a work that only coheres once you already know the subject has failed the test it was designed to pass.
Example¶
An artist has spent months on a canvas about a grandmother's slide into dementia — the intended experience is a warm order dissolving into unplaceable fragments. Before the painting is titled or hung, six people who know nothing about it are brought in one at a time. Each is asked three open prompts: what do you see, what does it feel like, what might this be about? One reads it as a coastline at dusk; two feel "something warm coming apart" but cannot say why; one reads it as purely decorative; two fixate on a passage in the lower left that reads, unmistakably, as a face. The readings are logged before anyone speaks the word dementia.
Only then is the brief revealed. Two findings surface immediately: the intended affect — warmth fraying into disorder — landed for a third of the panel unaided, which is real signal; but the face in the lower left is an unwanted literal cue that pulls half the room into portraiture and away from the dissolution the artist wanted primary. The critique does not tell the artist to "fix the composition." It tells them precisely which passage restores unwanted recognition and which relation is already carrying — the difference between a vague "it's not quite working" and a located next move.
How it works¶
The protocol is a controlled elicitation, not an open studio visit:
- Recruit uninformed readers. Viewers with no exposure to the source or brief, ideally spanning different reference cultures, seen one at a time so early readings do not anchor later ones.
- Withhold everything. No title, no source, no statement — the work must speak on its own carriers.
- Elicit before revealing. Open, non-leading prompts capture the free reading first; only then are prompted questions or the brief introduced.
- Record the spread. The full range of readings is logged, not just the modal one; convergence, divergence, and any label-dependence are noted.
- Compare to intent. The recorded range is set against the brief to locate where the intended relation transferred, where an unwanted literal cue intruded, and whether the work needed its label to cohere.
Tuning parameters¶
- Panel size and diversity — more readers and more varied backgrounds widen coverage of the readings the work affords, at the cost of scheduling and analysis time.
- Prompt openness — fully free association surfaces genuine first readings but is noisy; prompted questions sharpen signal but risk leading the witness toward the answer.
- Reveal timing — how long the source stays hidden, and whether a second round of reading is taken after the reveal to see what the label changes.
- Tolerated divergence — how wide a spread of readings still counts as success; a narrow band suits a single intended relation, a wider band suits a work meant to stay polysemous.
- Anonymity — whether readers respond privately or in discussion; private capture avoids social conformity, discussion surfaces reasoning.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is that it exposes the one failure the maker structurally cannot see: a work that is coherent only from the inside. It catches label-dependence, unwanted literal cues, and the case where viewers converge confidently on the wrong invariant — all invisible to someone reading through the source. Anchoring the elicitation is the discipline of the intentional fallacy: what the artist meant is not the same as what the work does, and the blind reading measures the latter.[1]
Its failure modes are those of any small-sample study. A tiny or unrepresentative panel over-reads a handful of idiosyncratic responses; leading prompts manufacture the convergence they claim to detect; and the most seductive misuse is treating the protocol as a search for the single "correct" reading, which quietly punishes a work for being generative and collapses intended ambiguity into "error." The guarding discipline is to judge readings against the intended range the brief declared, not a single answer, and to keep prompts open until the free reading is safely recorded.
How it implements the components¶
Blind Interpretation Critique realizes the testing-and-review side of the archetype — it evaluates a finished study rather than producing one:
