Translates a source into progressively simplified planes, curves, and masses.

Detail can hide structure. Geometric Simplification Series is the method that removes detail on purpose and in stages, re-describing a source as a small set of planes, curves, and masses and then simplifying that description again, and again, each step reducing the source toward its underlying geometry. It is a producing method: at every stage it applies concrete transformations — flattening a rounded form to a facet, fusing two volumes into one mass, straightening a wandering contour into an axis — and keeps the intermediate results as a series. Its defining commitment is that simplification is generative, not merely reductive: each step is meant to make the source's volumetric organization more legible than the last, so that by the end a viewer reads mass and plane where they once read surface incident.

Example

A designer is developing a mark based on a Shaker ladder-back chair and wants the architecture of the chair — the tension between vertical posts and the stacked horizontal rungs — rather than a portrait of one chair. She starts from a careful volumetric drawing, then runs a deliberate series. Stage one replaces turned finials and tapered legs with plain cylinders and a single seat plane. Stage two fuses the four legs into a trapezoidal mass and reduces the rungs to three evenly spaced bars. Stage three drops two rungs and states the whole chair as two verticals crossed by one horizontal against a flat back-plane.

Each stage is a real transformation applied to the previous one — a fusion, an omission, a straightening — not a fresh drawing from scratch, so the lineage is visible. By stage three the object has stopped being "a chair" and started being a proportion: the relationship of upright to crossbar that gave the original its taut, upright character. The designer stops there, because a fourth step that removes the crossbar would take the geometry past the point where the chair's structure still organizes the form.

How it works

  • Set a distance target and direction. Decide how far toward pure geometry the series should travel and which volumetric relation is the destination, so the march has an intended endpoint rather than drifting.
  • Apply transformations one at a time. At each stage use a named operation — faceting a curve, fusing volumes, straightening a contour, dropping a subordinate mass — so every step is a legible move on the one before it.
  • Keep the intermediate stages. Retain the whole series, not just the last frame; the sequence is the artifact, because it shows how the geometry was arrived at.
  • Stop at legibility, not emptiness. Halt at the simplest stage where the intended structural relation still organizes the form, before further reduction dissolves it into a generic shape.

Tuning parameters

  • Step size — how much is removed per stage; small steps trace a fine gradient but multiply the series, large steps move fast but hide where structure changed.
  • Geometric alphabet — whether the source is stated in planes, in curved masses, or in straight facets; the choice of primitives biases what kind of order becomes visible.
  • Endpoint distance — how far the series is allowed to travel toward pure abstraction; a near endpoint keeps recognizability, a far one commits to structure over subject.
  • Fidelity of the source's irregularity — how much of the original asymmetry or imperfection each simplification is allowed to regularize; more regularization is cleaner but risks replacing real tension with neatness.
  • Retention density — how many intermediate stages are kept for later review versus discarded to keep the series legible.

When it helps, and when it misleads

Its strength is that it makes a source's volumetric structure explicit and shows its own derivation, so a later reviewer can see exactly which step clarified the geometry and which one overshot. It is the natural front end for design marks, icons, and any translation where underlying form matters more than surface. A tidy final shape can feel resolved while carrying none of the original's force. The guarding discipline is to stop the series at the narrowest form where the intended structural relation still organizes perception, and to check each simplification against whether it clarified that relation or merely smoothed it away — a judgment this method makes on its own geometry, leaving the formal invariant-versus-recognition assessment of an ordered set to its sibling test.
