Most interruptions change how someone is treated; Blind Review instead removes the trigger — it cuts the loop on the input side, at the single moment of evaluation, by hiding the label before interpretation can begin. Its defining move is subtractive and one-shot: it does not standardize behavior, redistribute opportunity, or supply counter-evidence; it simply denies the evaluator the expectation cue (name, institution, reputation, prior score, demographic) until a judgment has formed on the work itself. Because the whole mechanism is a boundary on when a label may be seen, it is powerful exactly where the prophecy operates through expectation-driven reading of ambiguous evidence — and inert everywhere the loop operates after the veil comes off.

Example

A scientific journal moves to double-anonymized review: reviewers no longer see author names or affiliations. Previously, a manuscript from an unknown lab was read with a faint "probably thin" expectation that colored every ambiguous claim, while an identical manuscript from a famous group got the benefit of the doubt. With identities hidden, a reviewer judges the unknown lab's paper on method alone and recommends acceptance. The expectation channel — prestige buying charitable interpretation — is severed at its source, because the cue that fed it never reached the reviewer's eye until the assessment was fixed.

How it works

Two moves distinguish it, and they are the whole mechanism:

  • Choose the input as the cut point — decide that the loop is best broken at expectation visibility, before interpretation, rather than during treatment or feedback.
  • Bound the label's exposure — hide the specific trigger cues, and specify how long the veil holds (until a first independent judgment is recorded) and how unavoidable leaks (self-citations, distinctive style, a small field) are handled.

It does not attempt to make treatment fair after review; it makes the review itself label-innocent.

Tuning parameters

  • What to hide — name, institution, prior scores, demographics, or all of them. Hiding more cuts more channels but strips context that is sometimes legitimately needed.
  • Veil duration — blind only until a first judgment is logged, or through the entire decision. Longer veils resist leakage but complicate discussion.
  • Leakage handling — how self-citations, writing style, and small-field recognizability are managed; in some settings true blinding is impossible.
  • Re-exposure point — when and whether the label returns, and whether the first blind judgment is locked before it does.

When it helps, and when it misleads

Its strength is surgical: where interpretation-at-evaluation is the channel, hiding the trigger cuts the loop cleanly and cheaply. Double-anonymized review is the established name for this in scholarly and grant evaluation.[1]

Its limit is structural — it only covers channels upstream of the veil. If the expectation re-enters during interview, coaching, resource allocation, or monitoring, the loop simply relocates past the blind step. The classic misuse is theater: blind the résumé, then re-expose everything in an un-blinded interview and call the process fair. The discipline is to trace where the label re-enters and to pair blind review with treatment-side siblings for the channels it cannot reach.

How it implements the components

  • channel_interruption_choice — it makes an explicit choice to break the loop at the visibility/input channel, before interpretation.
  • label_boundary — it constrains where and when the label may be seen, an access restriction on the expectation trigger itself.

It does not standardize the treatment people receive (neutral_treatment_protocol, Neutral Treatment Protocol), redistribute opportunity (counterexpectation_intervention, Balanced Opportunity Assignment), or monitor outcomes (outcome_monitor, Outcome Monitoring Review).

Notes

Blind Review only ever protects the evaluation it wraps. Its close cousin Label-Neutral Reporting also bounds a label, but works on the content of the record rather than hiding identity at a review gate — reporting neutrally so many future readers are not steered, versus blinding one evaluator once. Where a loop has several evaluation points, a blind step at each is usually cheaper than one perfect veil.
