Neutral Treatment Protocol¶
A treatment protocol — instantiates Self-Fulfilling Prophecy Interruption
Standardizes the baseline treatment everyone receives — opportunity, information, respect, review, follow-up — so a label cannot buy better or worse handling through discretion.
When the prophecy channel is discretionary variation — one person quietly gets faster service, more benefit of the doubt, closer follow-up than another with the same need — Neutral Treatment Protocol removes it by fixing a standardized baseline. Its defining move is to set a floor of treatment (opportunity, information, respect, review, follow-up) that applies regardless of the label attached to a person, so the label can no longer buy better or worse handling in the gaps where discretion used to live. Where Interaction Script Revision edits the words and Blind Review hides the trigger, this sets, by rule, the minimum everyone actually receives — and lets justified, evidence-based accommodations sit above that floor rather than beneath the radar.
Example¶
A bank branch informally gives "priority" customers same-day callbacks, quiet fee waivers, and the benefit of the doubt on disputes, while customers carrying an "at-risk" tag wait longer and get their disputes scrutinized. The differential handling is the loop: at-risk customers, treated as problems, disengage and default more, confirming the tag. A neutral treatment protocol sets a standard baseline — the same callback SLA, the same dispute-review steps, the same information offered — for every account regardless of tag. Discretion above the floor still exists, but it no longer tracks the label. Freed from the manufactured neglect, a share of "at-risk" customers behave no differently from anyone else, revealing how much of the risk had been produced by the treatment.
How it works¶
Its distinguishing lever is a standardized minimum of treatment, enforced by rule:
- Identify the discretionary channel — which treatment behaviors (opportunity, information, respect, review speed, follow-up) currently vary with the label.
- Set the baseline floor — a standard everyone receives, specified concretely enough to audit.
- Locate justified exceptions above the floor — genuine, evidence-based accommodations or risk safeguards that remain, explicitly and for stated reasons.
- Audit for drift — check that the floor holds and that discretion has not quietly re-attached to the label.
Tuning parameters¶
- Which behaviors are standardized — opportunity, information, respect, review, follow-up; the more channels covered, the less room for label-driven discretion.
- Floor tightness — how prescriptive the baseline is versus how much discretion remains above it.
- Exception criteria — where risk-based or needs-based accommodations are justified, so neutrality does not mean ignoring genuine differences in need.
- Drift auditing — how often the protocol is checked for erosion back toward discretionary handling.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is that it closes the discretionary channel structurally, where consistency matters — admissions, triage, performance review, customer service, moderation — without requiring anyone to be talked out of a bias. It is an application of procedural justice[1]: consistent, transparent process is itself part of fair treatment.
It misleads when neutrality is confused with sameness — treating unequal starting points identically can entrench inequity, and a rigid floor can override a legitimate need or accommodation. The classic misuse is "same for all" applied where evidence justifies difference, or a protocol so uniform it strips necessary risk safeguards. The discipline is to preserve evidence-justified accommodations explicitly above the floor and to let a stakeholder check surface where standardization is being experienced as neglect.
