A purity claim is only worth what its history can prove. A Chain-of-Custody Log is the running record that makes the history provable: every time an item changes hands, location, or condition, the who / when / what / to-whom is entered, so the item's status at any later moment can be traced back through an unbroken sequence of documented transfers. Its distinguishing move is that it governs the boundary through evidence, not through any physical barrier — it neither contains nor cleanses anything. Its single obsession is continuity: a gap in the record is treated as a possible breach, because an interval nobody logged is an interval in which the item's status could have changed and no one can rule it out.

Example

A swab collected at a crime scene has to survive months before it means anything in court. From the moment it is bagged, the log begins: the collecting technician signs, seals, and timestamps it; the courier who drives it to the lab signs on receipt; the analyst who opens the sealed bag signs, and signs again when resealing it into evidence storage; the storage clerk logs it in and out. Each handoff is a link, and each link names both the releasing and the receiving person, so there is never a moment the swab was "just sitting somewhere" unaccounted for.

The payoff comes under cross-examination. Defense counsel doesn't need to prove the sample was tampered with — only that it could have been. If the log shows an unexplained six-hour gap, or a receiving signature with no matching release, that break is enough to put the result in doubt. But an unbroken chain — every custodian, every transfer, every seal accounted for — lets the analyst testify that the result belongs to this swab and nothing happened to it in between. The log didn't keep the sample clean; it kept the claim that it was clean defensible.

How it works

  • Log the item at origin. Fix identity and initial status at the first moment of control — the anchor every later link chains back to.
  • Record every transfer as a link. Each change of hands, place, or condition is entered with the releasing party, the receiving party, the time, and the item's state — so custody is continuous with no unnamed intervals.
  • Seal across handoffs. Tamper-evident seals bridge the gaps between logged events, so the record and the physical item corroborate each other.
  • Expose breaks on audit. Any missing link, unexplained interval, or mismatched signature is surfaced as a potential compromise, not silently smoothed over.

Tuning parameters

  • Link granularity — how fine an event triggers a log entry (every touch vs. every location change). Finer records leave fewer unexplained intervals but add friction to every handling step.
  • Tamper-evidence strength — from a signature to a numbered seal to cryptographic hashing. Stronger evidence makes a forged or backfilled entry harder, at rising cost.
  • Break tolerance — whether a small gap is recoverable with an explanation or voids the item's status outright. Strict voiding protects credibility but discards items on minor clerical lapses.
  • Retention horizon — how long the trail is kept auditable, which must outlast the longest time the status claim might be challenged.

When it helps, and when it misleads

Its strength is that it makes the history of a status claim inspectable after the fact, and it shifts the burden the right way: a challenger need only find a gap, which keeps custodians honest about logging in real time. This is the logic that governs the admissibility of physical evidence in court.[n1]

Its central weakness is that the log records custody, not integrity — it can be perfectly unbroken around an item that was contaminated before it ever entered the chain, or by a trusted insider who logs every step faithfully while tampering anyway. A pristine chain can thus lend false confidence to a compromised item. And because entries are made by the very people being held accountable, the classic misuse is backfilling — reconstructing a "complete" log after the fact to paper over a real gap. The discipline that guards against this is contemporaneous entry paired with tamper-evident seals, so the record and the physical item must corroborate each other rather than the paperwork standing alone.
