Visual boundary-marker artifact — instantiates Purity-Pollution Boundary Governance
Makes a decided clean, restricted, or contaminated status visible at a glance through a simple standardized marker anyone can read without expertise or lookup.
A boundary is only useful if the people near it can see which side of it something is on. Red/Green Status Tagging is the marker layer: it attaches a simple, standardized visual token — a green tag, a red tag, sometimes a yellow in between — to an object or space so that its already-decided status is legible instantly, to anyone, without asking, testing, or looking it up. Its distinguishing move is that it does exactly one thing and does it publicly: it displays a status that some other mechanism has determined. It does not judge whether the thing is clean, does not contain it, and does not record its past — it turns a verdict into a mark that is obvious at arm's length, which is precisely what lets a boundary be respected by a whole crew rather than just the expert who set it.
Example¶
On a large construction site, scaffolds are erected faster than any one inspector can personally vouch for each. So every scaffold carries a holder at its access point with a tag: green means a competent person has inspected it and it is safe to climb; red means it is incomplete or failed inspection and must not be used. A laborer arriving at the base makes a life-or-death decision in one glance, with no clipboard, no radio call, and no need to know why — the color carries the whole message. When a scaffold is altered mid-build, whoever changes it flips the tag to red until it is re-inspected, and the boundary re-forms the instant the mark changes.
The tag decides nothing. The inspection decides; the tag broadcasts the decision to hundreds of people who will never meet the inspector. That division is the mechanism's entire value: it converts one expert's private judgment into a boundary the whole site can read and obey at a distance.
How it works¶
- Fix a small, fixed vocabulary of states. A handful of mutually exclusive statuses (clean/safe, restricted, contaminated/unsafe) — few enough to be memorized by everyone, not just specialists.
- Bind each state to an unmistakable signal. Map each status to a standardized colour and form, chosen so the states can't be confused at a glance or by the colour-blind (shape and text back up the colour).
- Attach the mark to the thing, at its point of use. Place the tag where the decision is acted on — the scaffold's entrance, the equipment's control, the sample's lid — so it's read at the moment it matters.
- Keep the mark synced to the verdict. Whoever changes an item's true status changes its tag; the mark's authority depends entirely on it tracking the underlying decision in real time.
Tuning parameters¶
- State granularity — how many distinct statuses the scheme carries. More states express finer distinctions but erode the at-a-glance legibility that is the tag's whole point.
- Signal redundancy — whether colour alone carries the message or is reinforced by shape, text, and position. More redundancy survives colour-blindness, poor light, and wear, at some added cost and clutter.
- Change authority — who is permitted to flip a tag. Tight control keeps the mark trustworthy; loose control keeps it current but invites unauthorized or careless changes.
- Tamper resistance — how hard the tag is to move, forge, or remove. Higher resistance protects the signal's integrity where the stakes or incentives to cheat are high.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is compression and reach: it turns an expert verdict into a signal a whole untrained crowd can act on instantly, which is what makes a boundary enforceable at scale rather than only where the decider stands. This is the logic of visual control — managing by making status immediately visible on the floor.[n1]
Its failure mode is that the mark can drift from the truth. A green tag on a scaffold that was altered after inspection is more dangerous than no tag, because it manufactures false confidence — a stale or wrong mark is trusted exactly as much as a correct one. And because the tag is so cheap to apply, the classic misuse is tagging as theatre: slapping green on things to look compliant without the inspection behind it, so the marker certifies nothing. The discipline that guards against this is treating the tag as strictly downstream of a real decision — never a substitute for it — with clear authority over who may change a mark and a habit of flipping to red on any doubt, since a marker that outruns its verdict is worse than none.

It implements only this one component by design. It does not decide the status it shows — the categories and tests behind the mark belong to Aseptic Field Protocol and Allergen Segregation Plan; it does not physically isolate a flagged item — that's Quarantine Label and Hold; and it does not record the history behind the mark — that's Chain-of-Custody Log.

The tag is purely a display — it holds no verdict of its own and inherits all of its authority from whatever mechanism decided the status.
