A brief run-through of an already-known set of steps that keeps them primed and retrievable, deliberately stopping short of re-teaching or revising them.
The state kept alive here is procedural readiness — a sequence you already know but that goes dormant between uses and could be fumbled if it stays cold until the moment it's needed. Checklist Micro-Rehearsal brings an over-learned but currently-quiet routine back to the front of mind by lightly running through it. Its signature is a firm non-enrichment boundary: the goal is to keep the steps retrievable, explicitly not to learn, elaborate, or revise them. And because the act of running through the sequence exposes whether it is still intact, the rehearsal doubles as a probe — a blank where an item should be is the state telling you it has decayed, caught cheaply now rather than expensively later.
Example¶
Before an approach, a two-pilot crew runs a short challenge-and-response over the landing checklist — gear, flaps, brakes — even though both have flown the sequence hundreds of times. The point is not to learn it. It is to lift an over-learned routine out of dormancy and back into active readiness right before it is needed, and to surface — right now, for almost no cost — any item that has gone fuzzy or any configuration that is actually wrong. If a challenge draws a blank, that is the probe firing: readiness had decayed, and it is restored on the ramp instead of discovered missing on short final. Crucially, nobody uses the run-through to redesign the checklist mid-approach; it refreshes the state, it does not rewrite it.
How it works¶
Retrieve, do not relearn. Shortly before the routine is needed, it is run through once — often as a call-and-response so the retrieval is externalized and a partner can catch a miss. The run-through is timed just-in-time, kept shallow, and stopped the instant the sequence comes back clean: the aim is "still there," not "better." Because retrieval is the test, the rehearsal is also the probe — the same pass that re-primes the routine reveals whether it survived the gap.
Tuning parameters¶
- Rehearsal timing — just-in-time (immediately before use) versus scheduled at intervals. Just-in-time maximizes readiness at the moment of need; scheduled guards against long dormant stretches.
- Depth — naming the items versus walking the full sequence with actions. Deeper rehearsal restores a more degraded routine but costs more and risks drifting toward re-practice.
- Challenge format — silent self-review versus partner call-and-response. The response format makes the probe reliable but needs a second person.
- Probe strictness — how hesitant or blank a response has to be before the item counts as decayed and gets a fuller restore.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
It is the right tool for over-learned, high-stakes, intermittently-used procedures — the routine you know cold but haven't touched in weeks and cannot afford to fumble. It misleads when it is asked to do a job it cannot: rehearsal is not learning, so for genuinely novel or complex material a micro-rehearsal will not install what was never mastered. The classic misuse is letting the run-through drift into quietly modifying the procedure on the fly — retrieving a memory can briefly make it labile and open to alteration,[n1] so an off-hand "tweak" during rehearsal can corrupt the standard. The discipline is to rehearse against the canonical checklist and route any proposed change to formal review rather than absorbing it in the moment.
