Citation Lineage Review¶
Method — instantiates Source Provenance Triangulation
Traces a claim through references and derivative accounts to determine whether sources are independent or reproducing the same origin.
Ten sources agreeing on a claim look like ten times the confidence — unless nine of them are quoting the tenth. Citation Lineage Review is the method that follows a claim backward through its references, review articles, and derivative retellings to find out how many genuinely independent origins actually stand behind it. Its defining move is that it treats a citation as a dependency to be traced, not a support to be counted: it collapses a citation network down to its true roots, so that apparent consensus is re-scored by the number of independent origins rather than the number of repetitions. Where the count and the origins diverge — many citations, one source — it exposes a claim that is popular but not corroborated.
Example¶
A widely repeated figure in nutrition writing holds that a particular micronutrient "cuts risk by a third." A reviewer sets out to trace it. The popular-science article cites a systematic review; the review cites three earlier reviews; two of those three cite a single observational study from decades ago, and the third cites the popular-science article — a loop. Following the lineage, the reviewer maps the layers: an original observational finding (evidence), then a review that restated it as a stronger causal claim (interpretation presented as evidence), then downstream articles that inherited the causal framing without ever returning to the data.
The result is not "the claim is false" but "the claim rests on one original study, and the strength attributed to it was added by a later layer, not measured." Classifying the sources — one primary observational study, several derivative reviews, one circular citation — shows that the impressive citation count reduces to a single, aging origin. That single sentence changes how much weight the claim can bear, and points the next reader straight at the one study that actually matters.
How it works¶
- Trace references backward. Start from the claim as stated and follow each citation to its source, then that source's citations, until you reach records that cite no earlier source for the claim.
- Detect shared dependence and loops. Map where multiple paths converge on one origin, and where citations circle back on each other, so repetition is not mistaken for independent agreement.
- Separate the evidentiary layers. Note where each restatement added framing — a causal claim, a rounded number, a confident tone — that was not present in the original evidence.
- Re-score the consensus. Report the claim's support as the count of independent origins and the shape of the lineage, not the raw citation tally.
Tuning parameters¶
- Trace depth — how many citation hops back you follow before stopping. Deeper tracing finds buried single origins but costs time and hits paywalls and dead links.
- Independence criterion — how strict you are about what counts as a separate origin (different authors? different data? different funding?). Strict criteria expose more hidden dependence but disqualify borderline-independent sources.
- Layer sensitivity — how finely you track added framing between restatements. Fine tracking catches subtle claim-inflation but slows the review.
- Breadth vs. focus — whether you trace one headline claim exhaustively or many claims shallowly. Depth suits a load-bearing claim; breadth suits a first-pass screen of a document.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is that it defeats confidence-by-repetition: it is the specific antidote to a claim that spread widely from a weak root, the pattern sometimes called the Woozle effect — evidence-by-citation, where a claim acquires authority through being repeated rather than re-established.[n1] It is invaluable in research synthesis, fact-checking, and any literature where derivative reviews cite each other.
Its failure mode is over-trusting the visible trail. A lineage can look independent while hiding a shared upstream dependency — a common dataset, a single interview, an unpublished briefing everyone drew from — that no citation names. And the method can be misused as pure debunking: showing that sources share an origin proves they are not independent, not that the origin is wrong — a single well-founded study can be perfectly correct even when a hundred articles merely echo it. The discipline that keeps it honest is to report the shape of the support (how many origins, how strong the root) and to hand that finding to whoever sets the claim's confidence, rather than declaring the claim settled or refuted on lineage alone.

It does not reconstruct a single source's origin and authorship or issue a per-source verdict (provenance_record, confidence_label — that is Source Criticism Protocol, which interrogates one source in isolation where this method traces the relationships between many); nor does it weigh testimonial accounts by access and memory (reliability_weighting_rule — Witness / Source Comparison).
