Response protocol — instantiates Audience-Boundary Signal Spillover Governance
Pre-built routes and messaging to correct a misreading and steer misplaced responses to the right owner once spillover is detected.
Clarification and Redirect Path is the reactive machinery: pre-written clarifying statements, a decision rule for when to deploy them, and named routes — owners, intermediaries, channels — for sending each kind of response where it belongs. Its defining feature is that it activates after a signal has spilled and been misread; it is the correction-and-routing layer, distinct from preventing the misreading (Interpretive Context Brief) and from detecting it (Sentinel Uptake Monitor). Its value is speed: because the clarifications and routes are built in advance and kept warm, activation is a matter of minutes rather than hours spent drafting under pressure.
Example¶
An airline changes its checked-bag policy, intended for booked passengers and sent by email and in-app notice. It spills and is misread: travel bloggers post that "[Airline] now charges for carry-ons" — false; only checked bags changed — and the support line floods with a mix of angry booked passengers and confused non-customers reacting to the bloggers.
The redirect path activates on the sentinel's alert. A pinned, pre-approved clarification goes out — "carry-ons are unchanged; here is exactly what did change" — routed through the same bloggers who spread the misreading (the intermediaries whose audiences now hold it) and the airline's own social account. Support scripts separate the two inbound streams: affected booked passengers get a real answer, misinformed non-customers get a link to the clarification and are steered out of the queue. A pre-set rule governs the trigger: a correction ships once the misreading crosses a defined visibility, not on the first stray post. Within the hour the misreading is bounded and the queue is untangled.
How it works¶
- Pre-write clarifications for the likely misreadings. The high-risk readings from the audit and pre-mortem each get a ready, pre-approved correction, so no one drafts from scratch mid-spillover.
- Define trigger rules, not reflexes. Each clarification has a deployment rule — the visibility or spread at which it ships — so corrections are proportionate, not automatic.
- Map redirect routes. Specify which intermediary or channel carries each correction to which audience, and where each type of inbound response should be sent so it reaches its real owner.
- Keep it warm. Approvals, contacts, and templates stay current so activation is minutes; a redirect path that needs assembling on the day is not a redirect path.
Tuning parameters¶
- Response speed vs approval rigor — how much sign-off before a correction ships. Fast paths contain misreadings early; heavy approval protects accuracy but cedes the crucial first hour.
- Correction reach — how widely to broadcast. Reach should match the misreading's actual spread; over-broadcasting a contained misread only spreads it.
- Redirect specificity — how finely to route inbound responses. Fine routing gets each response to the right owner; coarse routing dumps everything on one overwhelmed queue.
- Escalation authority — who may pull the trigger. Broad authority is fast but risks premature or off-message corrections; narrow authority is safe but slow.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is containment: it bounds a misreading before it hardens and stops the wrong people from clogging a channel for the right ones. Built in advance, it converts the panicked scramble of a spillover event into a rehearsed, minutes-long response.
Its failure mode is that every correction re-states the misreading, and repetition can spread it further — the illusory truth effect[n1] — so a loud correction of a small, contained misread can amplify what it meant to quash. Its classic misuse is correcting reflexively: every misread, everywhere, at full volume. The discipline that guards against this is to match each correction's reach to the misreading's actual spread (sized by the Sentinel Uptake Monitor), and sometimes to let a contained misread die quietly rather than broadcast it into life.

Clarification and Redirect Path fills the reactive response-and-routing components:

It does not size how much response capacity is needed — that's the Spillover Response Load Test; and it does not supply proactive context before the signal goes out — that's the Interpretive Context Brief.
