The Collingridge Curve Workshop is a facilitated group method run before a major commitment. On a single shared timeline it draws two rising curves — how fast knowledge of a system's real consequences will accumulate as it is used, and how fast the cost of changing course will accumulate as it is procured, integrated, relied upon, and defended — and marks where they cross. Example

A public-health consortium is weighing whether to release a gene-drive mosquito strain to suppress malaria in a region. In the workshop, participants plot the consequence-information curve: the ecological and evolutionary effects that matter — off-target spread, resistance, food-web shifts — become legible only over several breeding seasons of open release. Against it they plot the intervention-cost curve: once a self-propagating organism is released into the wild, recall is effectively impossible almost immediately. The two curves barely overlap. They mark the reversibility horizon at "first open field release" and see it sits before the knowledge curve has risen at all. That single picture reframes the program: the entire evidence budget must come from caged, island-contained, and modeled trials staged ahead of the horizon, because nothing learned after it can be acted on.

How it works

  • Elicit unknowns and their latency. For each major consequence, ask not just "what don't we know?" but "how long after deployment before it becomes observable?"
  • Enumerate lock-in pathways. Technical, legal, financial, social, political, and ecological — reversibility is treated as many pathways, not one technical property.
  • Plot both curves on one time axis and locate the crossing.
  • Stress-test the horizon. Ask what would make it arrive sooner (a signed contract, a network effect, public reliance) so the marker is a range, not a false point.

Tuning parameters

  • Participant breadth — who is in the room. Including affected and vulnerable stakeholders surfaces lock-in pathways insiders miss, at the cost of a slower, harder-to-run session.
  • Time-axis resolution — coarse eras or fine milestones. Finer resolution locates the horizon more precisely but invites false precision about inherently fuzzy dates.

When it helps, and when it misleads

Its strength is making the closing window explicit and shared before anyone commits — turning "we should be careful" into a picture of exactly where and when care must bite. Its failure mode is being drawn once, framed on a wall, and never revisited, or leaning on optimism about how quickly knowledge will arrive; the Collingridge dilemma[1] is precisely that the neat crossing point resists being known in advance.
