Commitment Planning¶
Planning tool — instantiates Meaning Reconstruction
Operationalizes an already-chosen commitment into decisions, milestones, and routines, and bakes in a pre-specified condition for reopening it.
Commitment Planning is the planning tool that takes an already-chosen commitment and turns it into practice: concrete decisions, milestones, routines, and accountability checks, plus a pre-specified review condition — a named, measurable trigger that says when the commitment must be reopened. Its defining feature is that it does not choose the commitment (it consumes one) and it does not reinterpret identity or responsibility; it builds the operational scaffold and the circuit-breaker. That review condition is its signature: reconstruction, uniquely among the archetype's outputs, is supposed to be revisable, and Commitment Planning is the mechanism that makes revision a pre-committed rule rather than a someday intention.
Example¶
A youth soccer club, after a fractious season, had chosen a new commitment through a workshop: player development over winning. A fine sentence — and, on its own, inert. Commitment Planning is what makes it bite.
It decomposes the commitment into concrete decisions (an equal-playing-time policy, regardless of scoreline), milestones (every coach certified in a development curriculum by spring), and routines (a weekly skills block that replaces one scrimmage). It attaches accountability checks — a monthly review of actual minutes-played data against the equal-time policy. And it writes the review condition explicitly: reopen this commitment if parent attrition climbs above the prior year's or if there is no measurable skill growth after two full seasons. The output is a plan with a built-in trigger to stop and reconsider — not a vow to keep going forever, and not a values conversation.
How it works¶
What distinguishes it from ordinary project planning is the second half — the review condition as a first-class output:
- Decompose the commitment into decisions, milestones, and routines that connect it to weekly practice.
- Attach accountability checks — the specific data or moments where "are we actually doing this?" gets answered.
- Define the review condition as a named, measurable trigger — a circuit-breaker — not a vague "we'll revisit sometime."
- Pre-commit the trigger before the plan runs, so reopening the commitment is a rule the plan enforces on itself rather than a decision to be argued later.
Tuning parameters¶
- Milestone granularity — coarse checkpoints versus fine ones; finer milestones catch drift early but add tracking overhead.
- Routine cadence — how frequently the committed practice recurs; tighter cadence embeds the commitment faster but strains capacity.
- Accountability strictness — how consequential the checks are; strict checks drive follow-through but can feel punitive.
- Review-trigger sensitivity — how easily the reopen condition fires; tight triggers reopen the commitment often (risking churn), loose triggers risk a zombie commitment kept past its sense.
- Horizon — how far ahead the plan commits before the first mandatory review.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is that it stops reconstruction from dying as abstract talk — it is the mechanism that makes renewed meaning show up in the calendar — and the pre-committed review condition blunts sunk-cost lock-in by naming, in advance, the evidence that would end the commitment.
Its failure mode is over-planning and plan-continuation bias: an elaborate plan that keeps being executed long after the commitment behind it stopped making sense — which is exactly the failure the review trigger exists to prevent, and which returns whenever that trigger is left vague or unmeasured.[n1] The classic misuse is writing detailed if-then actions but no honest reopening condition, so the plan can only ever escalate, never stop. The guarding discipline is to make the review condition measurable and pre-committed, and to treat firing it as success, not failure.
How it implements the components¶
Commitment Planning fills the operational-and-review slice of the archetype:
action_link— decisions, milestones, routines, and accountability checks that connect the chosen commitment to concrete practice.commitment_review_condition— the pre-specified, measurable trigger for reopening the commitment when conditions or evidence change.
It does not choose the chosen_commitment, name the meaning_rupture, or build the responsibility_map — those belong to Role Transition Review and the upstream commitment-forming mechanisms; it consumes a commitment already chosen and does not decide it.

Editorial Notes¶
Form Classification¶
Form family: Representation, Specification & Plan
Rationale: Operationalizes an already-chosen commitment into decisions, milestones, and routines, and bakes in a pre-specified condition for reopening it, making its operative form a non-executable information artifact that externalizes static or prospective structure.
Independent corroboration: The frozen evidence defines Commitment Planning as 'Operationalizes an already-chosen commitment into decisions, milestones, and routines, and bakes in a pre-specified condition for reopening it', so its operative form is Representation, Specification & Plan.
Review outcome: Independent reviewer agreement; high confidence.
Origin Attribution¶
Primary origin: Psychology
Origin pattern: Cross-disciplinary synthesis
Present-day reach: Multi-domain
Rationale: Psychology established implementation intentions that translate a chosen goal into concrete cue-linked action.
Related originating lineages:
- Organizational & Management Science — Planning practice contributes milestones, accountability, and formal reopening conditions.
Review resolution: Both reviewers agree on psychology as primary. Reading the source mechanism confirms that its defining operation belongs to that lineage; the final record retains organizational_management only where it materially formed the mechanism and keeps present-day application breadth separate from provenance.
Encyclopedia synthesis: The exact catalogued form synthesizes established practice rather than reproducing a single standard historical label.
Review outcome: Reconciled after independent review; high confidence.
Notes¶
Its nearest twin is Role Transition Review: both sit at the operational end of the archetype and both touch review, but Commitment Planning is a forward planning tool that operationalizes an already-chosen commitment into actions and a standing review trigger, whereas Role Transition Review re-maps responsibility and re-endorses a commitment at a role or mandate boundary. Planning assumes the commitment is settled; the review reopens what the commitment even is.
[n1] Peter Gollwitzer's implementation intentions — specific "when X, I will do Y" plans that reliably raise follow-through. Commitment Planning uses that action-linking power but deliberately pairs it with a reopening trigger, because an if-then plan with no stop condition is precisely what hardens into plan-continuation bias. ↩
