Values Clarification¶
Elicitation method — instantiates Meaning Reconstruction
Elicits which values remain salient after a rupture and tests which of them can actually bear the weight of a future commitment.
Values Clarification is an elicitation instrument, run with one person or a small defined unit, whose entire output is a tested set of values: it surfaces what a person cares about, filters that set through the rupture to see which values survived and which were only ever attached to the lost frame, and then tests candidate future directions against the survivors to see which the values can genuinely endorse. Its defining feature is that it stops at the value set and its endorsement test — it does not map responsibilities, draft a plan, or produce a governing artifact. It answers one question sharply: of everything I thought I valued, what still holds after the break, and which of those can carry a commitment?
Example¶
A local-news reporter had built a career on one beat — the city council — and then the paper folded it. She could still write, still report, but she could no longer say what her work was for. Values Clarification is the step where she finds out what remains.
Working from a deck of value cards, she sorts them first by a blunt filter: does this still matter now that the beat is gone? Cards like "the daily rhythm of the newsroom" fall away — they were tied to the lost frame. Cards like "holding power accountable," "serving one specific community," and "the craft of a clear sentence" survive. Then she tests candidate directions against the survivors: a corporate-communications role fails the "holding power accountable" card; freelance investigative work and teaching both pass. The output is not a decision or a plan — it is a ranked value set plus a short list of commitments those values could endorse. Where she goes next is another mechanism's job.
How it works¶
Its method is a two-stage sort, which is what separates it from a generic values exercise:
- Elicit broadly — draw out the full field of what the person cares about, before any filtering.
- Apply the rupture filter — sort each value by whether it survived the break or was an artifact of the lost frame, so nostalgia isn't mistaken for value.
- Ladder — for each surviving value, ask "why does this matter?" until you reach the value underneath it.
- Run the endorsement test — hold each candidate future commitment against the surviving values and keep only those the values can actually bear.
Tuning parameters¶
- Elicitation breadth — a fixed card deck versus fully open prompts; a deck is fast and comparable, open prompts catch idiosyncratic values but take longer.
- Rupture-filter strictness — how aggressively values tied to the lost frame are set aside; strict filtering avoids nostalgia but can discard something still live.
- Laddering depth — how far "why does this matter" is pushed; deeper laddering reaches root values but risks over-abstraction.
- Endorsement-test stringency — how costly the hypothetical must be before a value "counts"; higher stringency separates real from aspirational values but can feel harsh.
- Aggregation — individual versus unit-level synthesis of the resulting sets.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is precision about the raw material of reconstruction: it cleanly separates the values that were really about the lost frame from the ones that survive it, and it pressure-tests candidate commitments before anyone invests in them. It keeps a person from rebuilding on values they no longer actually hold.
Its failure mode is the espoused-versus-enacted gap: it can produce a tidy, admirable list that no future behavior ever reflects.[n1] A related misuse is stopping at introspection — treating the clarified list as an end in itself rather than handing it forward. The guarding discipline is to always run the costly-choice endorsement test (would you hold this value if it cost you something?) and to route the tested set to a mechanism that turns it into responsibility and a commitment, rather than filing it as insight.
How it implements the components¶
Values Clarification fills only the value-material slice of the archetype:
value_clarification— its core: eliciting what still matters and filtering it through the rupture into a tested value set.chosen_commitment— it tests candidate commitments against the surviving values for endorsability, establishing commitment-readiness without installing the commitment itself.
It does not build a responsibility_map or action_link — those belong to Purpose Workshop and Commitment Planning; it produces the value material a group event turns into a mapped, collective commitment.

Editorial Notes¶
Form Classification¶
Form family: Communication, Facilitation & Learning
Rationale: Values Clarification operates as a designed message, facilitated interaction, ritual, or learning activity that changes shared understanding because it elicits which values remain salient after a rupture and tests which of them can actually bear the weight of a future commitment.
Independent corroboration: The frozen evidence defines Values Clarification as 'Elicits which values remain salient after a rupture and tests which of them can actually bear the weight of a future commitment', so its operative form is Communication, Facilitation & Learning.
Nearest alternative: Decision, Gate & Allocation — Values Clarification includes features of a case-specific gate, selection, routing, prioritization, or resource disposition, but its defining operation is a designed message, facilitated interaction, ritual, or learning activity that changes shared understanding.
Review outcome: Independent reviewer agreement; medium confidence.
Origin Attribution¶
Primary origin: Psychology
Origin pattern: Historically ambiguous
Present-day reach: Universal
Rationale: Miller and Rollnick, Motivational Interviewing documents that psychological counseling explicitly elicits and clarifies values to resolve ambivalence and guide action. This is direct, mechanism-specific evidence for psychology as the best-evidenced historical home of the operation—Elicits which values remain salient after a rupture and tests which of them can actually bear the weight of a future commitment.—rather than evidence merely that the operation is useful there. The retained alternates record genuine adjacent lineages; later portability is represented separately by domain_reach=universal.
Related originating lineages:
- Cognitive Science — Cognitive-science research on representation, learning, and recall supplies a parallel or contributing lineage for the mechanism's defining operation: elicits which values remain salient after a rupture and tests which of them can actually bear the weight of a future commitment.
- Ethnography & Qualitative Methods — Ethnography and qualitative comparative inquiry supplies a parallel or contributing lineage for the mechanism's defining operation: elicits which values remain salient after a rupture and tests which of them can actually bear the weight of a future commitment.
- Organizational & Management Science — Organizational Management supplies a historically relevant adjacent lineage or formative practice for the operation—Elicits which values remain salient after a rupture and tests which of them can actually bear the weight of a future commitment.—but the adjudicated evidence more directly locates the defining lineage in psychology.
- Philosophy — Philosophical logic, epistemology, and normative reasoning supplies a parallel or contributing lineage for the mechanism's defining operation: elicits which values remain salient after a rupture and tests which of them can actually bear the weight of a future commitment.
- Systems Thinking & Cybernetics — Systems science's feedback, boundaries, control, and regulation tradition contributes a separate formative lineage to the mechanism's values clarification logic.
Review resolution: The blind reviewers disagree on primary lineage (organizational_management versus psychology). The defining operation is: Elicits which values remain salient after a rupture and tests which of them can actually bear the weight of a future commitment. The researched Miller and Rollnick, Motivational Interviewing establishes that psychological counseling explicitly elicits and clarifies values to resolve ambivalence and guide action. That source therefore supports psychology as the historical origin. organizational management remains in the uncapped alternates where it contributes a formative practice, but application or governance is not itself proof of origin. origin_mode=historically_ambiguous records lineage construction; domain_reach=universal separately records later applicability.
Attribution caveat: Values clarification has psychological, philosophical, and qualitative-practice lineages.
Encyclopedia synthesis: The exact catalogued form synthesizes established practice rather than reproducing a single standard historical label.
Review outcome: Researched adjudication after independent review; medium confidence.

Notes¶
Its nearest twin is Purpose Workshop: both surface values, but Values Clarification is an individual elicitation instrument that outputs a tested value set, whereas Purpose Workshop is a group event that additionally maps responsibility and drafts a collective commitment. The workshop often consumes the value sets this instrument produces.
[n1] Chris Argyris and Donald Schön's distinction between espoused theory (the values people say they hold) and theory-in-use (the values their behavior actually reveals). A clarified value list is espoused until an endorsement test and a downstream commitment make it enacted. ↩
