Contamination Feedback Loop¶
Feedback-control mechanism — instantiates Negative Priming Avoidance
Closes the loop from rebound evidence back to the design, revising wording, emphasis, and replacement focus on a standing cadence whenever the unwanted target starts climbing.
A one-time safe design decays. Audiences habituate, counter-messages go stale, and a cue that was safe last quarter starts leaking activation this one. Contamination Feedback Loop is the standing control system that keeps a deployed intervention safe over time: it watches contamination signal and, on a recurring cadence, feeds it back into the design — refreshing the replacement focus, reweighting salience, updating wording — whenever the unwanted target starts climbing. Its defining move is acting on evidence over time: where a one-shot test renders a verdict, this loop consumes those verdicts continuously and changes the design in response. It does not itself run the probes; it is the closed-loop controller that turns their readings into revisions, again and again, so the intervention tracks a moving audience instead of freezing at launch.
Example¶
A search platform runs a safety redirect on self-harm queries: instead of surfacing harmful results, it foregrounds a crisis line and supportive alternatives. It worked at launch — but a feedback loop assumes it will not stay working. Every cycle, the trust-and-safety team ingests the monitoring signals (are users routing around the redirect to reach harmful terms? is a coded slang variant climbing?) and, on that cadence, revises: the supportive replacement content is refreshed when engagement flags, the visual weight of the safe option is rebalanced when a workaround gains traction, and newly emerging slang gets folded into the wording. The team never designed the redirect once; they operate it as a loop, because the population and its vocabulary keep moving. When a coded term begins to climb, the cadence catches it and the design shifts before the leak becomes normal.
How it works¶
Its method is closed-loop control, and its unit of work is the revision cycle:
- Ingest the contamination signal — take the rebound and monitoring readings as input (from the probes it consumes), watching for the unwanted target gaining familiarity or salience.
- Refresh the counter-message on cadence — on a recurring schedule, renew the replacement/counter content before it habituates, rather than waiting for it to visibly fail.
- Reweight and rewrite in response — adjust the salience of the safe option and update wording to close whatever gap the signal revealed.
- Re-observe and repeat — treat every revision as a new intervention to be watched, so the loop keeps closing rather than firing once.
Tuning parameters¶
- Cadence frequency — how often the loop cycles; faster tracks a shifting audience but costs effort and risks churning a design that was fine.
- Trigger threshold — how much contamination signal it takes to force a revision between scheduled cycles; lower is more responsive but noisier.
- Revision scope — whether a cycle re-tunes emphasis only or overhauls the replacement content; broader fixes more but destabilizes what worked.
- Refresh aggressiveness — how proactively counter-messaging is renewed before decay is proven; more pre-empts staleness but discards content that still worked.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is durability: it is the only sibling that defends against time — habituation, evolving slang, drift — by making safety a controlled variable rather than a launch property. It also blunts the Streisand[n1] dynamic, catching the moment a suppression starts drawing the attention it meant to deflect and adjusting before the leak normalizes.
Its failure mode is a loop that acts on noise or chases its own tail — over-frequent revision that churns a working design, or reacting to a blip as if it were a trend. The classic misuse is running the loop without a trustworthy measurement feeding it: a cadence of confident redesigns steered by intuition rather than probe evidence, which can amplify contamination while feeling responsive. The guarding discipline is to gate every revision on real signal from the test it consumes, and to size the cadence to how fast this audience actually drifts rather than to the team's appetite for tinkering.
