Rather than warn harder, the design team builds a replacement that captures the same slot. They profile what their users — mostly commuters in their thirties — already reach for, and land on a sixty-second breathing minigame with haptic feedback that they've tuned to feel like the inhale-hold-exhale rhythm of a cigarette, paired with a running streak counter that lights up. When the post-meal craving hits, a gentle buzz launches the game. The point is not that breathing is healthy; it is that the vivid, tactile, streak-rewarded ritual is engineered to grab the exact attentional and motor slot the cigarette used to own — designed around this audience's habits, not a generic wholesome tip.

How it works

Its distinguishing work is inventing the competitor and matching it to the audience, not editing existing text:

  • Profile the audience's live associations — what images, actions, and rewards this specific group already finds vivid and reaches for, since a replacement only captures if it is salient to them.
  • Design the competing object — build a concrete, performable, rewarding alternative sized to occupy the same attentional and behavioral slot as the avoided concept (a ritual, not a slogan).
  • Bind it to the trigger — attach the replacement to the exact cue that used to summon the unwanted concept, so it fires automatically rather than requiring a decision.
  • Make it win on vividness — ensure the alternative is more concrete and rewarding than the thing it displaces, because a pallid substitute loses the slot back.

Tuning parameters

  • Concreteness — how specific and performable the alternative is; a named action captures better than an abstract value, but is narrower.
  • Reward strength — how much the replacement pays off (streaks, feedback, relief); more reward captures harder but risks a new dependency.
