Exposure Dose Limiting¶
Dose-control mechanism — instantiates Negative Priming Avoidance
Caps how often, how prominently, and how vividly the unwanted concept appears, so a necessary mention never accumulates into familiarity.
Some hazards must be named — but every naming is a dose, and dose accumulates. Repeat the unsafe example, enlarge the image, dwell on the detail, and mere repetition breeds familiarity, familiarity breeds normalization, and the thing you meant to warn against starts to feel ordinary. Exposure Dose Limiting treats the unwanted concept as a quantity to be rationed: it sets an explicit ceiling on how many times it appears, how prominent each appearance is, and how much vivid detail each carries, spending the minimum needed for comprehension and no more. Its defining variable is amount — not the wording, not the order, not the alternative, but the total quantity of exposure. It is the only sibling whose lever is a number: how much of the target does the audience have to meet at all?
Example¶
A newsroom covers a mass-casualty attack. The instinct — and the click-driven pressure — is to run the perpetrator's name in every headline, reproduce the manifesto's language, and detail the method step by step. Editors instead apply a dose ceiling drawn from established reporting guidance: name the target concept once, low in the story, never in the headline or the push alert; describe the method only to the granularity a reader needs to understand what happened, never as a reproducible sequence; and cap the perpetrator's photo to a single non-glorifying use. The facts a reader needs are all present. What is rationed is the repetition and vividness — the dimensions along which coverage tips from informing into rehearsing, and along which the next would-be attacker finds a template. Nothing here is reworded or reordered; there is simply less of the hazard on the page.
How it works¶
Its method is metering, and it needs a clear picture of exactly what is being metered:
- Map the target precisely — pin down which concept, name, image, or method-detail is the thing whose accumulation is dangerous, so the ration is spent on the right object and necessary context is not starved.
- Set the ceiling — decide the maximum count, prominence, and detail-depth the mention may reach across the whole intervention (once, low, non-headline, no reproducible steps).
- Spend the minimum for comprehension — include exactly enough for the audience to understand and act, then stop; each extra repetition is a cost, not a courtesy.
- Enforce across channels — apply the ceiling to headlines, thumbnails, alerts, and repeats together, since dose is cumulative across the whole surface, not per-item.
Tuning parameters¶
- Frequency cap — the maximum number of mentions; lower starves normalization but risks under-informing.
- Prominence ceiling — the loudest placement allowed (headline vs. body, alert vs. archive); demoting placement cuts dose without cutting facts.
- Detail granularity — how much procedural or sensory specificity each mention carries; less blocks rehearsal but can blur a hazard the audience must recognize.
- Comprehension floor — the minimum exposure below which the message stops being understood; the ration must never drop through it.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is that it targets the one thing the other siblings leave alone — sheer quantity — and so it is the direct antidote to the mere-exposure[n1] and contagion risks that reordering or rewording cannot touch. It is essential wherever repetition itself is the harm, as in copycat dynamics.
Its failure mode is rationing below the comprehension floor: cut the dose too hard and the hazard becomes unrecognizable, so people cannot avoid what they cannot identify — a workplace that never quite names the banned practice, a health alert too vague to act on. The classic misuse is confusing dose limiting with concealment — suppressing a name the public has a right to know and calling it safety. The guarding discipline is to fix the comprehension floor first and ration only the surplus above it, and to keep the reason for each cut auditable so a ration never quietly becomes a cover-up.
How it implements the components¶
exposure_frequency_guardrail— it is the ceiling on how often and how prominently the unwanted concept is repeated; setting and enforcing that cap is its whole function.unwanted_activation_target_map— it pins down precisely which concept, image, or detail is the dangerous-to-accumulate object, so the ration is metered against the right thing.
It does not design the safe alternative that fills the freed attention (replacement_focus_design) — that is Replacement Attention Capture. Nor does it reorder or reweight the cues that remain (cue_sequence_inventory, salience_rebalancing_plan) — that is its nearest twin Cue Order Resequencing, which changes where a mention sits while this changes how much of it there is.
