Contextual Inquiry¶
Field method — instantiates User Context Validation
Studies users in the actual setting where the work happens — watching and asking at the same time — so the situated constraints and workarounds that never surface in a lab become visible.
Contextual Inquiry goes to where the work actually happens and studies it there, combining observation with in-the-moment questioning. Its defining move — the thing that separates it from an interview on one side and pure observation on the other — is that the user does their real task while the researcher watches and asks "why" as it unfolds. That simultaneity is the point: the setting supplies the constraints an interview room strips away, and the questioning supplies the reasons that silent observation can only guess at. What it yields is not a list of opinions but a picture of how work is really done, complete with the taped-up cheat-sheets and half-official shortcuts that people never think to mention because, to them, they are just how the job goes.
Example¶
A logistics team has rolled out a handheld scanner meant to guide warehouse pickers item-by-item, on the assumption that "pickers navigate the aisles by the scanner." A researcher spends a shift walking the floor beside one picker. Within an hour it's obvious the picker keeps a paper list taped to her cart and consults the scanner only to confirm — because the scanner's search takes several taps with gloves on, and in a cold, noisy aisle the paper is faster. Asked why in the moment, she explains the glove problem the design never accounted for. The session produces a map of the real constraints — aisle layout, gloves, noise, time pressure — and flatly contradicts the navigation assumption, handing the design team a grounded reason to rethink the search interaction rather than the picker's "compliance."
How it works¶
The distinguishing stance is master–apprentice: the user leads as the expert doing their own work, and the researcher follows as an apprentice who interrupts only to ask why something is done a certain way, in the moment it is done.[n1] Sessions are deep and one-on-one, run in the genuine environment rather than a facility, and the constraints and workarounds observed are afterward assembled into an explicit model of the context — the layout, tools, interruptions, and norms that shape the behavior.
Tuning parameters¶
- Observe-to-ask ratio — how much the researcher intervenes. More questioning surfaces reasons but disturbs the natural flow; more silent watching preserves it but leaves motives to inference.
- Immersion depth — a single hour versus a full shift. Longer immersion catches interruptions and rare events but costs access and analysis time.
- Site coverage — one location or several. Multiple contexts reveal which constraints are universal versus local, at the price of effort.
- Interpretation cadence — whether observers reconcile notes into a shared model right after each session or in bulk later; prompt reconciliation preserves detail that fades.
- Recording fidelity — notes, audio, or video. Richer capture aids analysis but raises the observer effect and consent burden.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is reaching tacit practice — the routines and workarounds users cannot articulate in the abstract because they are automatic — and grounding a design assumption in the physical and social reality that lab methods delete. Its honest limits are the observer effect (people perform when watched), small samples that tempt over-generalization, and researcher inference dressed up as observation. The classic misuse is to run the inquiry after the design is locked and cherry-pick the one observed workaround that confirms the choice already made. The discipline that guards against it is to visit several contexts, hold structured interpretation sessions that keep the whole team honest, and keep a hard line between what was seen and what was concluded.

It does not track recurring or delayed needs over time — that longitudinal view is Diary Study's unmet_need — nor does it author the design change; design_revision belongs to Participatory Design Session.

Notes¶
Contextual inquiry and Field Observation both go to the real setting, but they differ in one deliberate way: field observation watches without intervening, preserving natural behavior at the cost of unspoken reasons, while contextual inquiry questions in the moment, trading a little naturalness for the why. Choose observation when intervention would distort the work; choose inquiry when the reasons behind the behavior are what the design hinges on.
