How it works

  • Identify the transient driver. Name the passing state that inflates risk — high arousal, a pressure tactic, a volatility spike — and confirm it is the kind that genuinely subsides with time.
  • Set the window from the decay curve. Choose a duration long enough for that state to fade on a typical case, reading it off how fast the state is known to cool rather than off a test result.
  • Pad for spread. Add a buffer because individuals and situations cool at different rates; the window covers the slow cases, not just the median.
  • Forbid, then expire. The risky action is barred inside the window and permitted when it expires — the expiry is the release, and it prevents the delay from hardening into an indefinite block.

  • Window length — the core dial. Longer windows let more heat dissipate but impose more delay and frustration; shorter windows restore speed at the cost of catching people while still hot.
