Corroboration Ladder¶
Evidence rubric — instantiates Source Distortion Modeling
Orders independent traces from weak consistency checks to strong external confirmation and contradiction.
The Corroboration Ladder is an ordered rubric that ranks the ways an account can be checked against the reality it describes — from the weakest rung, where the account is merely internally consistent, up through partial external agreement to the strongest, where independent traces of the referent directly confirm or contradict it. Its defining move is that every rung tests independence: a higher rung counts only if the corroborating source does not share the account's upstream, so the ladder can tell genuine confirmation from correlated echo. It grades how well an account is anchored to reality — not which claim types are reliable, and not what may be published.
Example¶
An internal auditor receives a whistleblower's claim that a manager filed inflated travel expenses, and climbs the ladder. Rung 1: the account is internally consistent — weak, since a fabricated story can be consistent too. Rung 2: a colleague "confirms" it — but the colleague heard it from the whistleblower, so it is not independent and does not advance the claim. Rung 3: filed expense reports and calendar entries partly agree; the trips at least exist. Rung 4, the strong rung: hotel invoices and credit-card records — traces of the actual events, generated independently of the whistleblower — show charges that do not match the filed amounts, directly confirming the discrepancy. The auditor's finding rests on rung 4, explicitly discounts the non-independent rung-2 "corroboration," and flags one claim that never rose above rung 1. Independence, not volume of agreement, decided it.
How it works¶
- Order the checks by strength — internal consistency, weak external agreement, strong external agreement, independent record or physical confirmation and contradiction.
- Test independence at every rung — a corroborator that shares the account's origin does not climb the ladder, no matter how confident it sounds.
- Include countertraces — the ladder ranks contradiction as seriously as confirmation; a strong disconfirming trace outranks weak agreement.
- Anchor to the referent — the top rungs are traces of the actual event, not other tellings of it.
Tuning parameters¶
- Independence stringency — how strictly a corroborator must be causally separate from the account before it counts. Loose criteria inflate confidence with echoes.
- Rung count / granularity — a coarse three-rung scale versus a fine gradient; finer scales discriminate better but are harder to apply consistently.
- Confirmation / contradiction symmetry — whether disconfirming traces are weighted equal to, or heavier than, confirming ones.
- Referent proximity threshold — how close a trace must be to the actual event (versus a downstream record of it) to reach the top rung.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is that it defuses the most seductive corroboration error — mistaking many agreeing sources for strong confirmation when they secretly share one upstream. Sometimes suspiciously unanimous agreement should lower confidence, not raise it, because it signals a common cause or systematic error rather than independent convergence: the paradox of unanimity.[1]
Its failure mode is that the ladder can be gamed by dressing a dependent source as independent, and a strong-looking top rung can rest on a trace that is closer to another account than to the event itself. It ranks corroboration strength but does not decide the final reading. The classic misuse is counting an echo chamber as a stack of witnesses. The guarding discipline is to trace every corroborator back to its origin before crediting it, weight contradiction fairly, and reserve the top rung for genuine traces of the referent.

It ranks corroboration strength at a moment but does not track how an account changes over time (revision_and_escalation_trigger) — that is the Contradiction Timeline — nor convert its rungs into scoped claim weights (reliability_weighting_rule, claim_type_reliability_partition), which the Narrator Reliability Matrix does by reading the ladder as one of its columns.
