When someone offers a case that seems to break a universal claim, the first honest question is not "does it break the claim?" but "is it actually a member of the category at all?" Counterexample Admissibility Test answers exactly that, and it answers it by a rule the boundary-shift dodge is designed to violate: a candidate's membership is judged against other accepted members — an edge-case comparison set — and never against the disputed property. If the candidate is a member by the same standard that admits the uncontested cases, it is admissible, and the claim must face it. The test's defining move is this separation of the membership question from the truth question: it settles whether the case counts, so that the audit cannot escape a real counterexample by pretending it was never in the category.

Example

A biology claim states: "All birds fly." A student offers a penguin. Is the penguin an admissible counterexample, or can it be waved off as "not really a bird"? The admissibility test builds an edge-case comparison set from uncontested members — a robin (obvious bird), an ostrich (flightless but universally accepted as a bird), a kiwi, a chicken — and checks the penguin against the standard those cases satisfy: feathers, beak, egg-laying, the amniote lineage that defines the clade. The penguin meets every criterion that admits the ostrich, a bird no one disputes.

The test therefore records the penguin as an admissible counterexample. It has said nothing about whether "all birds fly" should be narrowed, weakened, or abandoned — that remedy is someone else's job. What it has done is close the exit: because the penguin is a bird by exactly the standard that admits the ostrich, the claim cannot be rescued by expelling it. Any attempt to do so would now have to expel the ostrich too, which the comparison set makes plainly absurd.

How it works

  • Record the candidate as a first-class object with its stated properties, independent of the claim it is being offered against.
  • Assemble an edge-case comparison set of accepted members — especially atypical-but-uncontested ones (the ostrich, not just the robin), because they carry the real membership standard.
  • Apply the shared standard — admit the candidate if and only if it satisfies the same membership criterion the comparison cases satisfy.
  • Return admissible / inadmissible, with the comparison set attached as the justification, so the ruling is auditable and not a bare assertion.

The test refuses to consult the asserted property when judging membership; that refusal is what makes it resistant to the dodge.

Tuning parameters

  • Comparison-set breadth — how many and how atypical the reference members are. Including hard, accepted edge cases (flightless birds) is what pins the standard; a set of only prototypical members lets a defender wriggle.
  • Membership threshold — how many shared criteria the candidate must meet. A strict all-criteria rule is conservative; a family-resemblance rule admits fuzzier cases but invites dispute.
  • Anchor selection — whether reference cases are drawn from the claimant's own prior acceptances (hardest to disown) or from a neutral taxonomy.
  • Tie handling — how genuinely borderline candidates are dispositioned: admitted, excluded, or flagged as "membership itself contested."

When it helps, and when it misleads

Its strength is that it defeats the dodge on its own terms: by fixing membership through accepted peers, it prevents a claim from being quietly saved by ejecting the one case that threatens it. It embodies the discipline behind falsifiability — a universal claim must genuinely expose itself to membership-qualified counterexamples[1].

Its failure mode is a poorly chosen comparison set. If the reference members are all prototypical, the standard they encode is too loose and a real member gets ruled inadmissible; if they are cherry-picked, the test can be gamed in either direction. The classic misuse is stacking the set with only easy cases so that an awkward candidate "fails to resemble" them. The guarding discipline is to seed the comparison set with the hardest accepted members — the cases a claimant has already conceded are in — so the standard cannot be tightened just for the troublesome candidate.

How it implements the components

The test fills the archetype's case-adjudication slots:

  • counterexample_candidate_record — captures the proposed counterexample as a standalone object to be judged.
