Symmetric-Case Application hunts for a specific tell of the boundary-shift dodge: uneven scrutiny. In a healthy category, the membership test is a single standard applied the same way to everyone. In the dodge, confirming cases sail through unexamined while disconfirming cases face a sudden, stringent membership audit — the asymmetry is the mechanism by which the boundary quietly contracts. This check makes membership scrutiny two-directional: it takes the exact criterion being used to expel a counterexample and applies it, unchanged, to the accepted members too. If the criterion that ejects the troublesome case would also eject cases the claimant happily counts, the standard is exposed as opportunistic. Its defining move is symmetry itself — not judging whether any single case belongs, but checking that one rule governs all of them.

Example

A sales director claims: "All our top performers cold-call every morning." A challenger points to Rivera, consistently a top-three seller, who never cold-calls — she works warm referrals. The director excludes her: "Rivera's not a real top performer; her numbers come from inherited accounts, so they don't count the same way."

Symmetric-Case Application takes that exclusion criterion — "revenue from inherited accounts doesn't count toward top-performer status" — and applies it across the whole accepted set, using an edge-case comparison set of the other people the director calls top performers. It finds that Delgado, a celebrated cold-caller the director cites as proof of the claim, books 40% of his revenue from inherited accounts too. Under the criterion just invented to expel Rivera, Delgado is no longer a top performer either — yet the director never questioned him. The check surfaces the asymmetry: the "inherited accounts" rule was applied only to the case that threatened the claim. It renders no verdict on cold-calling's value; it shows that the membership standard was not one standard but two, which is the fingerprint of confirmation bias[n1] operating as a boundary shift.

How it works

  • Extract the operative exclusion criterion exactly as used against the disconfirming case.
  • Build a symmetric comparison set drawn from confirming members the claimant accepts.
  • Apply the same criterion to those members — no softening, no exceptions.
  • Report the asymmetry — list any accepted members the criterion would also exclude, and any disconfirming members it would spare. A criterion that fires only on threats to the claim fails the check.

The check's power is that it never argues about the criterion's merits; it only insists the criterion be applied evenly.

Tuning parameters

  • Symmetry scope — how many accepted members the criterion is tested against. Wider scope catches selective enforcement more reliably but costs effort.
  • Strictness of "same criterion" — whether near-variants of the exclusion rule count as the same standard or as distinct ones. Loose matching catches disguised double standards; tight matching avoids false accusations of inconsistency.
  • Direction — checking only expelled-vs-accepted, or also over-lenient admission of confirming cases that should fail.
  • Tolerance band — how large a consistency gap is allowed before the check fires, accommodating genuine graded membership.

When it helps, and when it misleads

Its strength is that it catches the dodge even when each individual exclusion looks locally reasonable — because the fallacy lives in the pattern of who gets scrutinized, not in any one ruling. It is often the fastest way to expose an opportunistic definition: the claimant cannot answer why the same rule spares their favored cases.

Its failure mode is false symmetry demands on legitimately graded categories, where membership honestly comes in degrees and a criterion may reasonably bite harder at the margins. Insisting on mechanical uniformity can mislabel a principled, gradient standard as inconsistent. The classic misuse is a "gotcha" that treats any difference in treatment as hypocrisy, ignoring relevant disanalogies between cases. The guarding discipline is to require that any asymmetry be justified by a stated, independent difference between the cases — not merely by which side of the claim they fall on.
