Curriculum Core Plus Electives¶
Workflow — instantiates Unity–Variety Balancing
Combines common learning outcomes with variable electives, local examples, projects, or pathways.
A curriculum core plus electives is a workflow that pairs a fixed set of common learning outcomes with a menu of elective pathways — courses, projects, examples, pacing — that each learner selects among under published selection rules. Its defining move is shared destination, chosen route: every graduate must reach the same core outcomes so the credential means one thing, but each learner composes a personal path by choosing electives that still satisfy those outcomes. Unity is the outcome set; variety is which electives, projects, and local examples a learner assembles as they move through the program. It is a sequenced selection process over approved options, not a product base or an interface standard.
Example¶
A mechanical-engineering department defines its degree as a core plus electives. The core outcomes are fixed for every graduate: statics, thermodynamics, a capstone design project, and the competencies its accreditation requires. In the later years the program opens elective slots governed by selection rules — choose four of twelve technical electives, at least one design-heavy; a semester abroad or a supervised research project may count for one elective; local industry examples are woven into whichever electives a cohort takes. A student drawn to robotics stacks controls and mechatronics electives and a robotics capstone; another leaning toward energy takes thermofluids electives and a wind-turbine project. Both graduate having met the same core. Outcome: two very different transcripts that a professional licensing board still trusts as the same degree.
How it works¶
The workflow runs in a fixed sequence. It fixes the common outcomes every learner must reach — the invariant the credential guarantees. It lays those alongside an elective menu — the zone where learner paths legitimately diverge. It publishes selection rules: how many electives, prerequisites, permitted substitutions (a project or study-abroad standing in for a course). And it ties electives and examples to learner and local context so the variety serves fit, not filler. What distinguishes it from a franchise-style floor is that the learner actively selects and sequences among vetted options over time, and the invariant is carried as outcomes a chosen path must still satisfy.
Tuning parameters¶
- Core-to-elective ratio — how much of the program is fixed. A bigger core buys comparability and a trustworthy credential; a smaller core buys personalization and fit.
- Elective menu size — more options give richer pathways but more advising, scheduling, and staffing load.
- Substitution flexibility — how freely projects, research, or study-abroad may replace courses, trading responsiveness against comparability.
- Pathway guidance — how strongly the workflow steers choices (recommended sequences) versus leaving selection fully open.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is producing one trustworthy credential that still fits diverse learners and local labor markets, with electives and examples keeping the program current without renegotiating the whole degree.
Its failure mode is a hollow core — electives grow so loose that "the same degree" no longer guarantees the same competence, and comparability quietly evaporates. The mirror failure is distribution-requirement box-ticking, where students scatter across unrelated electives that satisfy a rule but not a coherent education. The classic misuse is bolting on electives to chase enrollment without checking they still serve the outcomes. The guarding discipline is constructive alignment[n1] — keep every elective explicitly mapped to the core outcomes it advances, so the menu stays anchored to what the credential promises.
How it implements the components¶
invariant_core— the common learning outcomes and accreditation competencies every graduate must reach, whatever path they take.variation_zone— the elective menu, the legitimate space in which learner pathways differ.variation_rule— the selection, prerequisite, and substitution rules that govern how many and which electives count.local_context_signal— electives, examples, and projects are tied to learner interest and local industry context, so variety serves real fit.
It defines no standing exception_pathway for the genuinely unforeseen case — permitted substitutions here are pre-authorized selection rules, not waivers — and it runs no periodic review_rule that promotes or retires options over time; the first belongs to Common Core / Local Variation Policy, the second to Variant Review Board.

Form Classification¶
Form family: Protocol, Workflow & Routine
Rationale: Curriculum Core Plus Electives operates as a repeatable ordered procedure or handoff sequence that coordinates action because it combines common learning outcomes with variable electives, local examples, projects, or pathways.
Independent corroboration: The frozen evidence defines Curriculum Core Plus Electives as 'Combines common learning outcomes with variable electives, local examples, projects, or pathways', so its operative form is Protocol, Workflow & Routine.
Review outcome: Independent reviewer agreement; high confidence.
Origin Attribution¶

[n1] Constructive alignment — John Biggs's principle that learning activities and assessments should be designed to serve stated intended learning outcomes. Applied to electives, it is the check that keeps a varied menu tethered to the common outcomes the credential guarantees. ↩
