Decision Confidence Label¶
Confidence register — instantiates Archetype Overmatching Guardrail
Attaches a standardized confidence tag to the accepted match and ties each level to how far the decision may act, so a shaky pattern can't quietly license a confident action.
Decision Confidence Label applies a controlled vocabulary of confidence levels — confirmed / probable / possible / rejected, or high / moderate / low — to a pattern match, and binds each level to a permitted scope of action. Its defining property is that the label is not decorative: raising the stakes of the action requires raising the confidence of the match. It converts a fuzzy sense of sureness into a discrete, communicable tag that everyone reads the same way and that gates how far the decision may go.
Example¶
An assessment shop judges whether an adversary's troop movements match the "imminent invasion" archetype. Rather than reporting a flat "yes," they use calibrated confidence language — modeled on the intelligence community's estimative-probability tradition and the calibrated terms of bodies like the IPCC[1] — and tag the match "moderate confidence: consistent with invasion preparation, but also with a coercive bluff." The label is bound to an action boundary: high confidence would license pre-positioning forces; moderate licenses only heightened readiness and additional collection, not escalatory moves. The standardized tag stops a moderately-supported match from being read downstream as a certainty and triggering an action the evidence cannot bear.
How it works¶
Two coupled pieces: a fixed, shared vocabulary, so "probable" means the same thing to every reader, and an explicit mapping from each level to the actions it unlocks. Because the two are joined, a decision that wants more latitude has to earn a higher label with more evidence. The mechanism does not produce the underlying judgement of fit — it standardizes and communicates how sure that judgement is, and attaches consequences to it.
Tuning parameters¶
- Label set and definitions — how many levels, and what evidence each one requires; too few loses nuance, too many blur into each other.
- Action mapping — which actions each level unlocks; the tighter the coupling, the more the label actually bites.
- Calibration discipline — whether labels are checked against outcomes over time, to catch drift and inflation.
- Default on ambiguity — where an unclear match lands; a conservative default (lower label, narrower action) fails safe.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
It is valuable when matches of very different strength would otherwise be reported — and acted on — identically; standardized confidence language is real, established practice in intelligence and climate assessment.[1] It fails through label inflation (everything drifts to "high" under pressure), through labels that aren't coupled to action (so they are politely ignored), and through false comfort — a confident label laid over a badly-reasoned match. The guarding disciplines: define the levels by evidence, bind them to action, and calibrate the labels against how they actually turn out.
