Choice-architecture default — instantiates Present-Bias Countermeasure
Sets the long-term-beneficial option as the standing default so people are enrolled unless they actively opt out, harnessing inertia toward their own future interest.
Default Enrollment configures the future-beneficial option as the standing state a person already occupies unless they take deliberate action to leave it. Its defining move is inverting the opt-in: where the long-term choice normally demands an active decision that procrastination and complexity postpone indefinitely, default enrollment makes non-decision produce the good outcome and puts the effort cost on exit instead. It moves no specific resources itself; it changes which way inertia points. Because it works precisely by not requiring a choice, its legitimacy rests entirely on the exit being real, easy, and non-punitive.
Example¶
A primary-care clinic changes how it books preventive care. Instead of asking patients to call and schedule next year's annual visit — which most never get around to — it books the appointment for them a year out and sends a reminder with a one-tap link to reschedule or cancel. Patients are now enrolled in their own follow-up by default. Attendance at annual visits rises, not because patients suddenly care more, but because caring now requires no action while skipping requires one. The design is a textbook nudge, and its defensibility hinges on the easy opt-out: the very same lever, aimed at the clinic's billing rather than the patient's health — say, defaulting patients into costly add-on services — would be manipulation, not care.[1]
How it works¶
- Identify the postponed good. Find the option a reflective person would choose but keeps deferring because of procrastination, complexity, or inattention.
- Make it the standing state. Enroll people in it by default, so it is what obtains when nobody acts.
- Move the effort to exit. Opting out requires a deliberate step; opting in requires none.
- Keep the exit clean. The opt-out is salient, easy, and free of penalty or shame — the condition that separates a nudge from a trap.
Tuning parameters¶
- Default strength — pure opt-out, "active choice" (a forced pick with no default), or opt-in. Stronger defaults move more people but reduce genuine deliberation.
- Opt-out friction — how easy leaving is. This is the ethical dial: too easy and the default has no force, too hard and it curdles into lock-in.
- Disclosure salience — how clearly people are told they have been enrolled. Transparency respects autonomy; concealment buys stickiness at autonomy's expense.
- Enrollment scope — who gets defaulted in. Broader reach captures more of the target population but raises the paternalism stakes.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is that it defeats procrastination and choice-overload without forbidding anything: the person keeps full control, but inertia now works for their future instead of against it. It is the highest-leverage countermeasure exactly where the failure is non-action.
Its central failure mode is paternalistic capture — a default set for the institution's benefit while dressed as help, or an opt-out made deliberately obscure so the "default" is really a one-way door. The classic misuse is the pre-checked box and the dark-pattern subscription, which enroll people into things they would not choose and bury the exit. The discipline that guards against this is to make opting out as easy as the non-choice, to disclose the enrollment plainly, and to be able to show the default genuinely serves the enrollee — libertarian paternalism only stays libertarian when exit is free.
How it implements the components¶

It does not move a specific sum on a schedule or ring-fence it — that recurring protected transfer is commitment_boundary, held by Automatic Savings, its nearest twin: Default Enrollment sets whether you are in a program, while Automatic Savings executes the flow of money once you are. It also adds no pause before action (temptation_friction — Cooling-Off Delay) and stages no reward (delayed_reward_structure — Milestone Reward Ladder).
