A desire path is the worn trail across the grass where people ignore the paved walkway and cut the corner they actually wanted. Desire Path Observation is the mechanism that treats such traces — physical or digital — as data: it watches the routes agents wear into an environment through repeated use and reads them as revealed preference, the honest signal of the action people want that the current affordances make hard. Its distinguishing stance is that it never asks; it only watches what accumulates. Where a survey records what people say and a test scores a variant you designed, desire path observation harvests the choices people are already making, unprompted — and tracks how those worn routes shift over time.

Example

A university opens a new quad with a crisp geometric path grid; within a season a brown diagonal has been trodden across one lawn, corner to corner, straight at the library door. Rather than fence it off, the grounds team runs Desire Path Observation. They don't survey students; they photograph the wear each week and log where it deepens and where it fades. The diagonal hardens (a stable, high-traffic desire); a second faint trace near the café appears and then vanishes when a food truck moves on (transient); the paved path along the north edge stays pristine (an affordance nobody wants).

The read is a ranked map of revealed routes: "one strong, persistent desire line worth paving; one transient one worth ignoring; one built path worth removing." The team paves the diagonal — literally letting the users' revealed preference redesign the affordance — while the monitoring keeps running to catch the next line the new layout provokes.

How it works

  • Harvest traces; don't elicit reports. Read accumulated evidence of past action — wear, logs, clickstreams, shortcuts, workarounds — so the signal is revealed behaviour, not stated intent.
  • Separate persistent from transient. Weight a route by how consistently it recurs, so a durable desire is distinguished from a one-off.
  • Read the absence, too. A provided affordance with no trace is as informative as a worn one — it marks an action nobody wants.
  • Keep watching after the change. Every reshaping provokes new paths; observation is continuous, not a one-time read.

Tuning parameters

  • Trace medium — physical wear, transaction logs, clickstream, support tickets; each surfaces a different slice of revealed behaviour.
  • Observation window — long enough to tell a durable desire line from a fad; too short over-reads noise, too long misses fast drift.
  • Aggregation grain — individual traces versus crowd-level heat; fine grain finds minority paths, coarse grain finds the dominant one.
  • Pave-vs-block threshold — how strong and persistent a path must be before you formalise it (or decide to close it off).

When it helps, and when it misleads

Its strength is that it captures the one thing self-report can't — what people do when no one is asking — and it is often the cheapest, most honest source of the affordance a design is missing. It also naturally catches drift: the slow divergence between how an environment was meant to be used and how it has come to be used.

Its failure mode is that a worn path shows that people route this way, never why, so it is easily misread. The diagonal might trace a genuine preference or just a temporary obstacle, and paving it blindly — "paving the cow path"[n1] — can formalise a workaround that was really a symptom, or bake in a harmful shortcut users took under pressure. Traces also silently omit the agents who never got far enough to leave one. The discipline is to pair the trace with a why — a contextual observation — before paving, and to ask who is missing from the path, not just who wore it.
