Friction Adjustment changes behaviour by changing how hard each action is, not whether it is possible. It smooths the path you want people to take — fewer steps, closer to hand, more salient, safer to try — and adds drag to the one you don't — an extra confirmation, a delay, a step out of the way — so the environment's effort gradient does the persuading. Its defining idea is that friction is a dial, not a defect: a small, well-placed increase or decrease in effort reliably shifts what people do, precisely because most action follows the line of least resistance. It never forbids the harmful action or hides the desired one; it just re-slopes the ground between them.

Example

An office cafeteria wants staff to eat better without banning anything. Friction Adjustment re-slopes the room. The salad bar moves to the front, directly in the entry flow and at eye level (lower friction, higher salience); the fizzy drinks move from the checkout cooler to a fridge at the back (a few extra steps of friction); desserts stay on the menu but are now ordered rather than pre-plated (one added step). Nothing is removed and nothing is mandatory. Within weeks the salad-to-soda ratio shifts noticeably — perhaps ≈ a fifth more salads — not because anyone was told to eat better, but because the better option became the easy one.

The result is a behaviour change bought entirely with layout: reversible, cheap, and honest in that every option is still fully available to anyone who wants it. The dessert step is the tell — it doesn't stop dessert, it just turns an impulse into a deliberate choice.

How it works

  • Move effort, not availability. Add or remove steps, distance, delay, and salience while leaving every action fully possible; the effective action space re-slopes but never shrinks.
  • Asymmetric by design. Smooth the desired path and add drag to the harmful one at once; the gap between them is what moves behaviour.
  • Reveal progressively. Show the common, safe action first and tuck advanced or dangerous options behind an extra step, so salience itself becomes a friction dial.
  • Make the good path safe to try. Lower the risk-friction of the desired action by making it reversible, so hesitation isn't what blocks it.

Tuning parameters

  • Friction magnitude — how many steps or how much delay you add or remove; too little does nothing, too much breeds resentment or workarounds.
  • Symmetry — whether you only ease the good path, only impede the bad one, or both; both-at-once is strongest but most paternalistic.
  • Salience vs. structural friction — whether you move an option's visibility (an attention cost) or its steps (an effort cost); attention is cheaper to change and easier to reverse.
  • Reversibility of the nudge itself — how easily the agent can override the slope; a fully reversible tilt preserves autonomy, a costly-to-override one shades toward coercion.

When it helps, and when it misleads

Its strength is that it is the cheapest, fastest, most reversible shaping tool — a layout change, one added step — and it reaches behaviour that argument and training never touch, all while leaving every option open.

Its failure mode is the same dial run the other way: friction deliberately added to trap people is sludge — the one-click signup and the ten-step cancellation.[n1] Adjusting friction without understanding why people take the harmful path can simply relocate the behaviour (a workaround, a worse channel) or punish the users least able to absorb the extra steps. And because the tilt is invisible, it is the easiest sibling to deploy manipulatively — shaping toward the designer's interest rather than the agent's. The discipline is to keep the harmful-side friction proportionate, to confirm the smoothed path is genuinely in the agent's interest, and to watch for displaced behaviour after the change.

How it implements the components

Friction Adjustment fills the effort-shaping side of the archetype — the components that re-slope a path without closing it:

It sets no hard boundary — an action it makes costly is still possible; making the wrong action *impossible is Physical or Digital Keying, and pre-selecting a good option is Safe Default or Preselected Path.
