Discourse Analysis¶
An analytic method — instantiates Social Reality Construction Audit
Reads a body of talk and text for the recurring metaphors, labels, and storylines that make a category feel natural and legitimate, and surfaces the rival readings the dominant one crowds out.
Discourse Analysis is an interpretive method applied to a corpus — speeches, reports, threads, campaign materials, internal memos — that reads language for the construction work it performs: which metaphors frame the thing, which storylines make it self-evident, whose voice is centered. Its second, distinguishing move is that it registers the competing and suppressed interpretations, not just the dominant one. Unlike a language review, which scans operational artifacts for fixes, discourse analysis theorizes how meaning is produced and names the readings that the reigning discourse pushes to the margin.
Example¶
Analysts examine how illness is talked about across a hospital's patient materials, public campaigns, and clinician language, and find the war metaphor everywhere: patients "fight," are "brave," and "lose their battle." The storyline makes one identity — the heroic fighter — feel natural, and quietly casts declining aggressive treatment as "giving up." The analysis also surfaces the readings the martial frame crowds out: illness as a process to be lived with, palliative choices as fully legitimate. Susan Sontag made exactly this observation about military metaphors of illness[1] in Illness as Metaphor; the method generalizes it into a systematic read of a corpus, in the tradition of critical discourse analysis.
How it works¶
The distinguishing discipline is a corpus, close reading, pattern extraction, and attention to what is absent:
- Assemble a corpus — the actual talk and text, not a paraphrase of it.
- Extract recurring patterns — the metaphors, labels, categorizations, and storylines that repeat.
- Show the construction work — how those patterns naturalize the arrangement and position actors within it.
- Register the rival readings — the interpretations that are contested, marginalized, or silenced.
It interprets meaning-making; it does not tally forms for revision or measure how widespread a view is.
Tuning parameters¶
- Corpus selection — official rhetoric only versus including operational and everyday talk. Everyday talk catches how the frame actually lives, not just how it is marketed.
- Interpretive frame — descriptive (what patterns exist) versus critical (whose power the patterns serve). Critical is sharper but more contestable.
- Granularity — the word-and-metaphor level versus the whole-narrative level.
- Silence attention — how hard to hunt for the readings that are absent. Chasing the silences is where suppressed alternatives show up.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is making visible how a taken-for-granted reality is talked into naturalness, naming the specific metaphors doing the work. Its failure modes are over-reading (finding a grand ideology in an incidental word choice) and unfalsifiable "everything is discourse" analysis; its classic misuse is cherry-picking a corpus to prove a conclusion decided in advance. The discipline that guards against this is a representative corpus and a check of the analyst's readings against how people actually use the terms — which is precisely where firsthand elicitation comes in.
How it implements the components¶
Discourse Analysis realizes the meaning-production side of the archetype — how language builds and legitimates the reality, and what it silences:

It does not map the institutions that stabilize the language (institutional_reinforcement_map → Institutional Analysis) or gather participants' own meanings firsthand (affected_party_meaning_map → Stakeholder Meaning Elicitation).
