Comparison matrix — instantiates Emic-Etic Dual-Account Interpretation

A grid that places the same cases under both the emic and the etic account at once, so correspondences, partial matches, and outright breaks between the two become visible cell by cell.

Emic-Etic Contrast Matrix is the contrastive-analysis surface of the archetype: a grid that holds the same cases visible under both accounts simultaneously and reads the mismatches straight off the table. Cases or categories run down one axis; the two accounts occupy the columns; each cell records the relation between them — direct match, partial match, no match, scale or scope shift, meaning conflict. Its single defining idea is that comparison happens on a shared, traceable surface where nothing is resolved into one account — the grid keeps both readings of a case side by side long enough for their divergence to register as a finding rather than get smoothed into agreement. It surfaces mismatch across many cases; it does not tag what a single translation drops, and it does not decide what any mismatch should license.

Example

A conservation NGO is building a forest-management plan with a highland community. Rows are forty plant taxa. One column carries the community's own folk categories — use-based and relational: firewood, medicine, trees that hold the soil — and the other carries the botanical Linnaean taxonomy by species. Filling in the cells, the pattern jumps out: the folk category soil-holders cuts across three different genera (a scope mismatch), while one Linnaean species splits into two folk categories distinguished only by ritual use (a meaning conflict). Most strikingly, the conservation team's headline metric — species richness — has no cell that lines up with soil-holders, the category that actually governs which trees people plant and protect.

That empty correspondence is the finding. Read on its own, species richness would have missed the functional, behavior-driving category entirely. The matrix does not tell the team what to do about it — but it makes the divergence impossible to overlook and traceable to the specific taxa where the two accounts part ways.[n1]

How it works

  • Choose the unit. Cases, categories, or statements — whatever keeps the same thing visible under both accounts.
  • Populate both columns from the two accounts without forcing equivalence: the etic column from the analytic coding, the emic column from participants' own scheme.
  • Mark each cell's relation from a shared vocabulary (match, partial, none, scale shift, meaning conflict, plural description).
  • Register the breaks. Cells that fail to correspond become divergence findings, each typed by kind, so a downstream step can weigh their significance.

Tuning parameters

  • Unit of comparison — case, category, or statement. Case-level rows keep context; category-level rows generalize but can hide within-category variation.
  • Relation vocabulary richness — a few relation types versus many. Richer vocabularies capture subtle mismatches but slow the fill and blur boundaries between relation types.
  • Divergence salience threshold — how large a mismatch must be before it is registered as a finding. A low threshold catches everything and risks noise; a high one may drop meaningful breaks.
  • Column symmetry — both accounts developed to equal depth, or one column present mainly as a check on the other. Asymmetry is honest when the accounts genuinely differ in maturity, but a thin column can read as parity it doesn't have.

When it helps, and when it misleads

Its strength is legibility: it turns a vague sense that "the numbers don't match the story" into a specific map of where and how the two accounts diverge, anchored to the exact cases that break. That is what lets a team argue about the right thing.

Its failure mode is the pressure the grid itself creates to fill every cell with a clean relation — and forcing a match where the truth is no clean relation is premature resolution, which destroys the very finding the matrix exists to surface. A well-developed etic column laid beside a thin emic one can also imply a false parity between the accounts. The guarding discipline is to make "no clean relation" a first-class, respectable cell value, to keep registered divergences open until their significance is assessed rather than closing them for tidiness, and to note openly when one column is thinner than the other.

How it implements the components
