Reflexive Positionality Memo¶
Reflexive memo — instantiates Emic-Etic Dual-Account Interpretation
A first-person memo in which the analyst records who they are relative to the phenomenon — their standpoint, stakes, and power — and traces how that position shapes what each account can and cannot see.
Reflexive Positionality Memo is the analyst's own written accounting of their standpoint. The researcher sets down who they are in relation to the phenomenon — social location, stakes, relationships to participants, prior theoretical commitments, institutional and funding power — and then reasons forward from each to a concrete effect: how it shaped the etic frame they reached for and the emic access they actually had. Its single defining idea is that the analyst's own position is turned from an invisible default into an examined, written input to the interpretation. It is self-authored and self-directed: not an outside body validating the account, and not participants confirming a reading, but the researcher auditing the lens they themselves brought.
Example¶
An ethnographer is studying an urban community garden. In her positionality memo she records the position she occupies: a funded university outsider; she shares a language with the gardeners but not their class or their history with the neighborhood; and her access runs through the garden's organizing committee, which shapes whose voice she is hearing. She then traces effects. Her etic frame — "urban food insecurity" — may over-read the plots as a response to scarcity and under-read the garden as a social and aesthetic space that people value on its own terms. And committee-mediated access biases the emic account toward the official, leadership-endorsed story of what the garden is for.
The payoff is not confession but consequence: the memo names a specific power-and-voice risk — marginal, non-committee gardeners underrepresented — and she acts on it by changing her sampling to reach them directly. The reflection is worth writing because it changed what she did.[n1]
How it works¶
- Inventory the position. Social location, personal stakes, relationships to participants, prior theoretical commitments, and institutional or funding power.
- Trace each to an effect on two things specifically: what the emic account can access and how the etic frame is shaped.
- Name the resulting power-and-voice risks — whose voice the analyst's position amplifies or suppresses — and the mitigations.
- Date it and revisit as the inquiry proceeds and the analyst's relationship to the field changes.
Tuning parameters¶
- Candor depth — surface disclosure versus searching self-examination. Deeper is more useful and more uncomfortable, and past a point risks self-absorption.
- Scope — personal identity, institutional power, theoretical priors, or all three. Widening scope catches more distortions but dilutes focus.
- Cadence — a one-off memo versus a running journal. A living memo tracks how position shifts during fieldwork; a one-off is a snapshot that can go stale.
- Action linkage — reflection only, or each reflection tied to a concrete change (sampling, framing, who gets consulted). Tight linkage is what separates a working memo from a ritual disclaimer.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is surfacing standpoint effects and the power the analyst themselves embodies before they silently distort both accounts — the over-read etic frame, the access-skewed emic account — while there is still time to adjust the design.
Its characteristic failure is confessional performativity: positionality written as a ritual disclaimer ("as a white middle-class researcher...") that names the position but changes nothing downstream — reflexivity as navel-gazing. A subtler misuse is self-disclosure deployed to pre-empt external accountability, as if naming one's power were the same as being answerable for it. The guarding discipline is to tie every reflection to a concrete methodological consequence, and to treat the memo as a complement to external review, never a substitute for it — the analyst examining their own lens cannot also be the authority that validates the result.
How it implements the components¶
reflexive_positionality_note— it is the positionality note: the analyst's documented standpoint and its traced effects on the two accounts.power_and_voice_guardrail— by naming the power the analyst holds and whose voice their position privileges, it installs a guard on voice that the analyst applies to their own conduct.
It does not give participants or a community standing authority to validate or contest the account (reciprocal_validation_path) — that external authority is Insider Review Panel, its nearest relation on the power dimension: the panel is a collective exercising authority over the account, whereas this memo is the researcher's own self-disclosure. Nor does it confirm specific readings with participants (emic_scheme_boundary) — that is Member Checking Session.
