Environmental Cue Change¶
Environmental cue intervention — instantiates Associative Cue Redesign
Changes the physical cue objects in a space — their placement, salience, or presence — so the old trigger fades from view and the intended one is right where the hand and eye land.
When a habit is set off by something in the room — an object within reach, a default screen, a sign in the wrong place, a well-lit path — you can change the behavior by changing the thing. Environmental Cue Change removes, moves, screens, or replaces the physical cue that starts the old response and puts a new, more available cue exactly where attention already falls. Its defining move is that it operates on the perceptual field itself — the objects and their placement — not on the person's intentions, the message wording, or the workflow order: make the old trigger harder to see and the desired one unavoidable, and the response shifts without anyone being asked to try harder.
Example¶
A grocery chain wants fewer single-use plastic bags taken at self-checkout. The old cue is physical and perfectly placed: a rack of open plastic bags hangs at exactly hand height in the bagging area, so grabbing one is the frictionless default.
Environmental Cue Change works the objects. The plastic rack is moved below the counter, out of the immediate reach-line (the old cue, screened), while a stack of paper bags and a small "bring your own?" card are set where the plastic used to hang (the replacement cue, now the first thing the hand meets). Nothing is banned and no sign lectures; a shopper who wants plastic can still get it. But the default object at the moment of bagging has changed, and with it the reflexive grab. The redesign lives entirely in what is placed where.
How it works¶
- Find the cue object and its reach-line. Identify the specific thing — its placement, salience, or sheer availability — that sets off the old response at the decision point.
- Remove, screen, or move it. Take the old cue out of the immediate perceptual field, or dampen its salience, so it no longer lands first.
- Install the replacement in its place. Put the intended cue exactly where attention and the hand already go, specific and legible enough to act on without thought.
- Preserve the alternative. Keep the old option reachable rather than banned, so the change reads as a shift of defaults, not a removal of choice.
Tuning parameters¶
- Salience gap — how large a visibility difference you create between old and new cue. A bigger gap moves more behavior but shades toward manipulation if the old option is buried.
- Removal vs. substitution — whether the old cue is taken away entirely or merely out-competed by a more available new one. Full removal is stronger; substitution preserves choice.
- Placement precision — how exactly the new cue sits at the point of action. An on-the-spot cue changes behavior; a cue a few steps away becomes decoration.
- Reversibility — how easily people can restore the old cue. Easy reversal respects autonomy but weakens the effect; a hard-wired change is durable but heavy-handed.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is that it changes behavior at the moment it happens without depending on memory, motivation, or instruction — it works on the environment, so the actor doesn't have to resist anything. This is stimulus control: arranging the surrounding conditions so a cue no longer sets the occasion for the old behavior and a new cue does.[1] It is the most direct lever when the trigger is a tangible thing in a place.
It misleads when the old cue is moved but its wider context is left intact — the response often finds a new trigger and the change quietly reverts. It also shades easily into covert influence: the same salience gap that helps can be used to bury a legitimate option, which is why the autonomy boundary belongs on it. And a physical cue-swap does nothing if the behavior isn't actually cue-driven — no rearranging of the room fixes a problem of skill or intent. The discipline is to keep the alternative genuinely available and to verify the response really followed the cue, rather than assuming the room was the whole story.
How it implements the components¶
Environmental Cue Change realizes the cue-object side of the archetype — the components that alter the physical trigger, not the ones that diagnose it or supply a response:
cue_removal_or_substitution— it removes, screens, moves, or swaps the physical cue that starts the old response.replacement_cue— it installs a new, more available signal at the point of action, made specific enough to act on.
It does not map the loop first (Habit Loop Mapping), decide what the new response should be (Behavior Substitution), or rearrange the surrounding workflow (Context Restructuring); pure removal or blocking of a trigger, with no replacement cue installed, is Trigger Removal's lane.
