How it works¶
- Name the field and its scope. Enumerate the specific places to look — no more, no less — so "scan the surroundings" becomes a finite list nobody has to reconstruct under pressure.
- Fix the cadence. Bind the sweep to a trigger or clock (every shift start, hourly, before each opening) so it happens on rhythm rather than whenever someone remembers.
- Attach a discrimination cue to each item. For every place to look, state what a true signal looks like against normal background, so the scan tunes the watcher's eye and not just their attention.
- Return a comparable read. Record the sweep the same way each time, so drift between one scan and the next becomes visible.
The checklist deliberately does not keep watch between sweeps or decide what to do with a finding; it structures the active look and hands its read onward.
Tuning parameters¶
- Scan scope — how many places the sweep covers. Wider scope catches more but lengthens each pass and dilutes attention; narrow scope is fast but risks a blind spot.
- Cadence — how often the sweep runs. Frequent scans catch fast-moving change but cost time and invite rote box-ticking; sparse scans are cheap but let change accumulate unseen between them.
- Discrimination sharpness — how precisely each "real signal vs. background" cue is drawn. Sharper cues cut false alarms but can miss an atypical presentation; looser cues catch more but flood the reader with maybes.
- Fixed vs. adaptive order — a rigid sequence (reliable, auditable) versus a risk-led reordering that looks at the hardest-hit places first (responsive, but easier to shortcut).
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
