Two regional news sites compete for the same readers. When one runs a louder, more alarming headline and its traffic ticks up, the other's editors feel their share slipping and answer with a louder headline of their own. Within a season both mastheads have drifted from measured reporting to permanent alarm, and neither can dial back without ceding attention to the rival. Escalation Archetype Mapping is the step where an editor stops asking "who started this?" and draws the structure: outlet A's loop (headline intensity up → A's share recovers → pressure eases) and outlet B's mirror loop, joined at the shared variable relative share of attention. On the page the two balancing loops reveal the spiral — and, crucially, they reveal what would end it. Not a bigger headline, but a change to the goal both are chasing: a shared editorial standard both can point to, or a measure of success that is absolute (reader trust, retention) rather than positional. The output is a structural reading, not a verdict about who is worse.

How it works

  • Fix the two parties and the shared threat variable. Escalation needs exactly two contending sides (or two coalitions) and one variable each reads as its position relative to the other.
  • Draw each side's balancing loop. Each party acts to restore its relative standing; on its own, that loop is stabilizing.
  • Couple them and read the spiral. Because the two balancing loops share the relative-position variable, together they form a reinforcing escalation — the signature the archetype is named for.
  • Mark the reaction delay. How fast each side answers sets how violently the spiral accelerates, and where a pause could interrupt it.

Where a general Causal Loop Diagram draws whatever loops a situation presents, this mapping is specialized to the two-actor reciprocal template and stops once that template is confirmed or rejected.

Tuning parameters

  • Actor granularity — two individuals, two teams, or two coalitions. Coarser actors keep the spiral legible; finer ones expose whether one "side" is really several with divergent goals.
  • Threat variable — which relative measure drives the reaction (share, capability, status). Choose the wrong one and you get a tidy but false spiral.
  • Symmetry assumption — whether the two loops are treated as mirror images or with different gains. Asymmetry changes where decoupling is easiest.
  • Referee inclusion — whether a third party (regulator, shared standard) is admitted as a potential brake. Adding it turns the map from diagnosis toward intervention.

When it helps, and when it misleads

Its strength is that it dissolves the "they are the aggressor" framing: both parties are running defensive loops, and the spiral is a property of the coupling that neither controls alone. That reframing points straight at the only durable exits — agree on an absolute goal, or break the link to relative position — instead of the futile one of winning the ratchet.

Its failure mode is forcing the two-actor template onto a problem that actually has many actors, or one whose real driver is an external ramp rather than reciprocal reaction — in which case the elegant spiral is an artifact.[1] The classic misuse is to draw the map and then read it as proof that the other side is escalating, converting a structural diagnosis back into blame. The guarding discipline is to confirm the loops are genuinely reciprocal — that each side's move answers the other, not an outside pressure — before accepting the label, and to hand the finished match to a separate reviewer rather than validating it yourself.

How it implements the components

  • symptom_pattern — gathers the tell-tale signs of escalation: matched or over-matched moves, "we only reacted to them" heard from both sides, and intensity that ratchets and never relaxes.
