But subscriber attention is finite and slow to regenerate, and the aggregate volume steadily degrades the shared pool — open rates slide, unsubscribes climb, and the list that everyone relies on grows less responsive for all of them. How it works

  • Define the shared resource and its regeneration. Name the common pool precisely and estimate how fast it replenishes — the rate the aggregate draw is racing.
  • Draw the boundary and enumerate every user. List all actors drawing on the pool, especially the ones outside the obvious frame; a missed user hides the true load.
  • Separate the private loop from the shared loop. Show each actor's individually rational reinforcing loop against the collective depletion loop they jointly drive.
  • Confirm the incentive asymmetry. Establish that benefit is private and immediate while cost is shared and deferred — the engine that makes restraint irrational for each actor alone.

Tuning parameters

Its failure mode is calling something a commons when the resource is not actually shared and rivalrous, or when the real structure is under-provision (nobody is investing) rather than over-extraction — a different diagnosis with a different fix. The classic misuse is leaping straight to privatization or enclosure as the only cure, when governed self-organization often outperforms it. The guarding discipline is to confirm rivalry and a correctly bounded shared pool before accepting the label — an explicit boundary check — and to keep alternative structures in play until the evidence is clear.
