How it works

  • Pick included cases that are unambiguously inside the intended sense — clean, canonical instances.
  • Pick non-examples that sit just across the boundary — near-misses, not far-off irrelevancies, because only near-misses teach where the line is.
  • Pair each contrast to isolate one distinguishing feature, so the reader sees which single difference flips a case from in to out.
  • Update the set as new edge cases surface in real adjudication.

The value lives almost entirely in the near-boundary non-examples; a list of obvious inclusions with no close exclusions teaches nothing.
