Spatial curation — instantiates Compositional Attention Design
Sequences objects, labels, lighting, and sightlines through a physical gallery so a moving visitor reads context, artifact, and comparison in a deliberate interpretive order — meaning built by the body's path, not the label alone.
Exhibit Design composes attention in a three-dimensional space through which the visitor physically walks, where the body is the cursor and the order of encounter is set by where a person can stand, turn, and see. Its distinguishing job is interpretive sequencing of objects: not merely arranging things attractively in a room, but staging the order in which a visitor meets context, then artifact, then comparison, then reflection, so that the meaning of an object is often established by its surroundings before the label is ever read. It works in real material constraints — floor plan, ceiling height, lighting, crowding, sightlines, and the visitor's finite stamina — and its success is measured by whether a person who never stops to read a caption still leaves with the intended interpretation, because the placement told the story.
Example¶
A regional history museum is mounting an exhibit on a nineteenth-century flood that reshaped the town. The objects exist — a salvaged shop sign, photographs, a relief map, personal letters, a recovered clock stopped at the hour the water hit. Laid out as a neutral grid of vitrines, the room reads as "old things behind glass," and visitors drift through in ninety seconds without grasping the human scale of the disaster.
Exhibit Design stages it as a walked narrative. The entrance funnels every visitor first past a wall-sized "before" photograph of the thriving main street in warm light — context, established bodily before a single caption. A turn reveals the relief map showing the river's normal course, sightline-aligned so the next thing the eye catches is the same street underwater. The recovered clock sits alone in a tightly-lit case at the emotional pivot, its stopped hands legible without a word; the letters are grouped beside it so the personal accounts read as belonging to that moment rather than as loose documents. Lighting drops and the aisle narrows through the "flood" section to slow the pace and heighten gravity, then opens into a bright "rebuilding" bay for release. A visitor who reads nothing still walks thriving town → the river turns → the hour it stopped → recovery — the sequence carries the meaning.
How it works¶
- Design the visitor's path, not just the room. Decide the order of physical encounter — entrance funnel, turns, choke points, sightlines — because that order is the narrative spine.
- Establish context before artifact. Place the scene-setting element where the body meets it first, so the focal object is already framed by the time it comes into view.
- Use sightlines as transitions. Align what is visible from each standpoint so the next intended object is caught in the eye's line, pulling the visitor onward without signage.
- Group objects into interpretive units. Cluster artifacts that belong to one moment or comparison tightly, and separate distinct chapters with space, so proximity reads as relation.
- Modulate pace with the physical envelope. Narrow aisles, dim light, and single-object framing slow and gravitate attention; open, bright bays release it — the body's tempo is part of the composition.
Tuning parameters¶
- Path constraint — how strictly the route is enforced (one-way funnel vs. open plan). A tight route guarantees the intended sequence; too tight and visitors feel herded and can't linger or backtrack to compare.
- Context-to-artifact spacing — how much scene-setting precedes the focal object. Rich framing deepens meaning; too much delay and impatient visitors reach the artifact having skipped the setup.
- Lighting contrast — how sharply focal objects are lit against dim surroundings. High contrast creates reverence and focus; overdone, it fatigues the eye and hides the connective material.
- Density per bay — how many objects share a standpoint. Sparse staging elevates each piece; dense staging tells more but forces the visitor to choose, weakening the intended order.
- Dwell-time budget — how long the whole sequence is designed to take before fatigue sets in. A tight budget keeps energy up; an over-long one collapses attention before the payoff.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is that it can make an object mean something before it is explained — using the body's movement, the order of sightlines, and light to do interpretive work that captions alone can't, and reaching the majority of visitors who barely read. It is the archetype's tool wherever the medium is walked rather than viewed.
Its characteristic failure mode is museum fatigue: attention, legs, and interpretive appetite are finite, and an exhibit that stages too many equally-weighted objects over too long a path loses its audience well before the intended climax, so the last third is walked past unseen.[1] The classic misuse is the "one of everything" curatorial impulse — cramming the full collection into the room so no artifact is slighted, which flattens the sequence into an undifferentiated march and erases the very narrative the path was meant to carry. The guarding discipline is to budget attention like a scarce resource: cut objects to protect the sequence, place a rest or a release after each intensity, and observe real visitors — where they actually stop, turn, and leave — rather than trusting the plan on paper.
