Surface composition — instantiates Compositional Attention Design

Places every element on a single static surface — through size, position, spacing, grouping, and contrast — so the eye lands on what matters first and reads the intended relations in one glance.

Layout Composition is the base case of the archetype: arranging a fixed set of elements on one bounded, static surface where everything is co-present and nothing moves. There is no time axis, no scrolling, no interaction, no live data — the viewer takes in the whole field more or less at once, so the entire burden of guiding attention falls on relative visual weight. Size, position within the frame, the gaps between things, whether items are grouped or fenced off, and how much each element contrasts with its neighbours are the only levers, and they must all be resolved simultaneously. That co-presence is what makes it distinct from every sibling that unfolds over time or responds to a user: here the composition either speaks in the first glance or it doesn't speak at all.

Example

A neighbourhood association is printing a poster for a Saturday farmers' market. The first draft has the market's whimsical hand-drawn logo huge and centered, the word "MARKET" in a decorative script, and — somewhere down in the corner in the same weight as the sponsor list — the date, time, and location. Pinned to a community board, it reads as a nice picture of a logo; passers-by cannot tell when or where without stopping to hunt.

Layout Composition reworks it as a single glance. The team inventories what is actually on the surface: logo, title, date, time, address, a produce photo, a tagline, sponsor logos, and a decorative border. They decide the intended first read is "Saturday, 8am, Elm Street Park." So the date and place become the largest, highest-contrast block, set dead in the optical center; the logo shrinks to a corner mark; the sponsor row is pushed to a quiet strip along the bottom, grouped tightly so it reads as one supporting unit rather than six competing ones; and the ornamental border — which had been pulling the eye outward — is thinned to near-invisible. From across the room the new poster answers when and where before anything else, and only then invites you closer for the charm.

How it works

  • Take a literal inventory of the surface. List every mark that occupies space, including the border, the whitespace, and the decorative flourishes — anything that will claim a share of attention whether you intended it to or not.
  • Assign one intended first-read. Decide the single element the eye should hit first, then the second and third. Everything else is supporting or suppressible.
  • Set weight to match rank, not sentiment. Give the top of the hierarchy the most size, contrast, and central or optically-weighted position; deliberately starve the rest of those same resources.
  • Group and fence with spacing. Tighten the gaps within a unit and open the gaps between units so proximity does the relation-signalling — related things read as one shape, unrelated things read as separate.
  • Quiet the accidental loudmouths. Find whichever element is currently winning attention it doesn't deserve (usually a logo, a big photo, or a border) and reduce its perceptual force until rank and weight agree.

Tuning parameters

  • Focal contrast ratio — how sharply the primary element outweighs everything else. Turn it up for a decisive single-message read; too high and the surface feels shouty and the supporting material becomes unreadable.
  • Grouping strength — how much tighter within-unit spacing is than between-unit spacing. Stronger grouping makes relations unmistakable but can fragment the surface into isolated islands.
  • Density — how much of the surface is filled versus left empty. Denser packing fits more in; more emptiness raises focal clarity but risks looking sparse or under-informative.
  • Alignment discipline — how strictly elements snap to shared edges or a grid. High discipline reads as ordered and calm; total rigidity can flatten the hierarchy so nothing steps forward.
  • Suppression depth — how far accidental attractors are quieted. Deep suppression protects the intended read but can erase charm or brand character the surface was also meant to carry.

When it helps, and when it misleads

Its strength is decisiveness on a hard constraint: one surface, one glance, no second chances to re-explain, and it forces the maker to choose what the eye hits first rather than hoping. It exploits reading gravity — the trained tendency, in left-to-right cultures, for the eye to enter top-left and sweep toward a bottom-right terminal — so the primary and the call-to-action can be placed where attention naturally arrives and leaves.[n1]

Its classic failure mode is aesthetic drift: the surface becomes balanced, tasteful, and pretty while the intended first-read quietly loses. The tell-tale misuse is centering and enlarging the logo "because it's the brand," which routinely hijacks the focal slot from the information the viewer actually needs. Layout Composition is also hard for its maker to judge — a single glance is exactly the thing the maker, who already knows the message, can no longer perform honestly. The guarding discipline is the maker's own squint-and-look-away heuristic: reduce the surface to blurred blobs and check whether the intended element still wins the first read. This is a rough self-check, not a built-in verification that real viewers actually read the surface as intended — that systematic cold-read is the job of interpretation_test, which this mechanism leaves to its siblings.

How it implements the components

Layout Composition fills the components that a single static surface can resolve by visual weight alone:

  • element_inventory — its opening move is the literal census of every mark on the surface, whitespace and decoration included.
  • perceptual_hierarchy — it assigns one intended first-read and ranks the rest, then makes size and contrast match that rank.
  • spatial_relation — proximity and fencing carry which elements belong together and which stand apart.
  • competing_salience_suppression — it actively quiets logos, photos, and borders whose pull exceeds their structural role.

It does not implement reading_path (there is no sequence to pace — that belongs to Page Design), interpretation_test (its squint self-check aside, it builds in no systematic cold-read of real viewers — that's Slide Composition), or accessibility_check (see Interface Layout).

[n1] The Gutenberg diagram (Edmund Arnold) describes "reading gravity" across an evenly-weighted page: the eye enters at a primary optical area top-left, drifts to a weak fallow corner top-right, and terminates bottom-right. It is a default tendency, not a law — strong focal weight can override it — but placing the primary message and the exit action along that diagonal works with the reader's habit rather than against it.
