Experience Sampling¶
Sampling method — instantiates Lived Experience Capture
Pings people at signal-contingent moments across days to capture their state right then, building a picture of how experience varies across moments, contexts, and moods rather than what it averages to.
Experience Sampling treats a person's ongoing experience the way a pollster treats a population: it samples moments. At semi-random prompts spread across the day and across days, participants report their state right then — what they are doing, where, with whom, how they feel — so that the study accumulates a scatter of momentary snapshots rather than one retrospective summary. The single idea that makes it this mechanism is that its unit of analysis is the moment, sampled to reveal variation: how the same person's experience swings by time of day, setting, activity, and mood, and which contexts reliably produce the highs and lows. It answers "when and where is it like this?" — a question no averaged score and no single-session method can even pose.
Example¶
A company moves its engineers to unassigned hot-desking and the aggregate survey says satisfaction is "neutral," which reads as harmless. To see what neutral actually contains, the team runs a three-week experience sampling study: an app pings each participant at a few unpredictable moments a day to log, in ten seconds, their location, current task, and a quick focus and stress rating. The averaged neutral dissolves into a shape. The morning scramble to find any free desk spikes stress before the workday even starts; deep-focus work is fine at a quiet corner desk but craters near the café zone; and afternoons in the phone-booth pods are the calmest moments in anyone's day. The finding is not a number but a pattern of variation — the policy is not uniformly neutral, it is bad in specific, fixable contexts — and it is trustworthy precisely because it was captured across many moments rather than recalled at the end.
How it works¶
The distinguishing machinery is signal-contingent momentary capture. Prompts fire on a semi-random schedule the participant cannot anticipate[1], which is what keeps the sample from being biased toward memorable or convenient moments the way recall is. Each entry is deliberately tiny — a few taps — so it can be completed in the moment without derailing whatever is happening, and each is timestamped and context-tagged. Analysis then looks across the accumulated moments for structure: which contexts, times, or activities co-occur with which states, and how much any one person's experience varies from moment to moment. Because momentary self-report is still self-report, the design is usually built to be cross-checked against an objective trace — calendar data, badge swipes, device sensors — so the reported pattern can be corroborated rather than trusted alone.
Tuning parameters¶
- Prompt frequency — a couple of pings a day versus many. Denser sampling resolves finer variation but fatigues participants and thins compliance.
- Sampling scheme — signal-contingent (random beeps), interval-contingent (fixed clock), or event-contingent (triggered by an activity). Random beeps best estimate how time is actually spent; event triggers best catch a specific rare moment.
- Entry length — a single rating versus a short battery. Longer entries capture more per moment but raise burden, which erodes the response rate that makes the sample trustworthy.
- Study window — days versus weeks. Longer windows catch weekly rhythms and rare contexts but strain sustained compliance.
- Objective pairing — how much passive or sensor data is logged alongside the self-report to triangulate it.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is resolving variation that averages erase — showing that an experience rated "fine" overall is actually excellent in one context and miserable in another, and pinning the misery to a specific, addressable moment. Its failure mode is that response to the prompts is itself selective: people miss beeps exactly when they are busiest, most stressed, or most absorbed, so the very moments that matter most can be the ones systematically undersampled, and the tidy distribution can lend a quantitative sheen to what remains subjective momentary judgment. The classic misuse is reading the sampled frequencies as population prevalence or as causal proof — "sixty percent of stressful moments were near the café, so the café causes stress." The discipline that guards against it is to watch the compliance pattern for who and what is being missed, triangulate the self-reported pattern against an objective trace before believing it, and state plainly that the study characterizes within-person variation over moments, not causes and not a population rate.
How it implements the components¶
experience_pattern— its signature: many momentary snapshots are aggregated into the structure of how experience varies across moments, contexts, and states, preserving the swings instead of collapsing them to one mean.triangulation_plan— the momentary self-report is designed from the outset to be cross-checked against objective traces (sensors, logs, calendars), so a reported pattern is corroborated rather than taken on faith.
It does not preserve anyone's own extended told account — the whole-story fidelity of first_person_account is Narrative Account Collection's — nor does it read meaning from immersion in a setting the way Ethnographic Observation does with contextual_meaning_trace; a momentary ping captures a state, not its interpretation. Notes¶
Experience Sampling and Diary Study both capture experience in the moment across time, and are easily confused. The difference is what each is for. A diary asks the participant to narrate an event when it happens — a self-triggered story about a recurring friction, rich in the participant's own meaning. Experience sampling fires at the researcher's semi-random signal and takes a thin, uniform reading of the current state, so the sampled moments can be compared as a distribution. Diary study is narration for recurrence and meaning; experience sampling is measurement of variation across sampled moments. Choose the diary when the why of a recurring problem is the prize; choose sampling when the when-and-where of a fluctuating state is.
