False-Continuation Interruption is the inverse of the archetype's other cues: instead of building continuity, it breaks it, inserting a deliberate discontinuity exactly where the eye would otherwise glide from one element into an unrelated one and read a connection that is not there. Its defining move is the engineered stop at a boundary — a gap, a gutter, a change of channel, a hard divider — placed precisely where perceptual continuation or grouping would mislead, so the viewer's gaze halts, chooses, or crosses to a genuinely separate context rather than flowing on autopilot.[n1] It exists to protect the truth of the other cues: where a smooth line or a shared attribute would falsely bind things, this mechanism cuts the tie so the false whole never forms. Its concern is the negative space in the cue map — the places continuity must not happen.

Example

An analytics team publishes a line chart of daily active users that spans a period during which the logging pipeline went dark for nine days — no data was collected. In the naive chart, the line simply connects the last point before the outage to the first point after it, and the eye, obeying continuation, reads a smooth decline straight through the gap as if it were real measured behavior. It is not; those nine days are unknown. The chart author interrupts the false continuation: the line is broken across the outage, the two segments left visibly disconnected, and the gap shaded and labeled "no data." Now the eye stops at the edge of the break instead of gliding across it; the reader perceives two separate stretches of known data with an acknowledged void between them, not one continuous trend. The author confirms the fix by showing the two versions to a few analysts and checking that no one any longer describes a "decline" across the missing window. The interruption did not add information — it prevented the eye from inventing some.

How it works

  • Find the false link. Locate where a continuation or grouping cue would carry the eye across a boundary it should not cross — a data void, a context switch, a pair of items that must not read as sequential or as one group.
  • Break the cue at the seam. Sever the specific cue doing the false binding: cut the line, widen the gap past the grouping threshold, change the channel (color, region) so the shared attribute no longer spans the boundary.
  • Make the stop legible. Mark the break so it reads as an intentional discontinuity, not an error or an omission — a labeled gap, a divider, a branch marker.
  • Confirm the eye stops. Check that real viewers now halt or branch at the boundary and no longer describe the false connection.

Tuning parameters

  • Break salience — how conspicuous the interruption is. A strong, marked break reliably stops the eye but fragments the layout; a subtle one preserves flow but may be leapt anyway.
  • Boundary placement — exactly where the discontinuity sits relative to the false link. Placed at the true seam it cleanly severs the wrong connection; placed loosely it either fails to break the link or chops something that should have stayed whole.
  • Break vs. bridge balance — whether the gap is left open (pure stop) or spanned by an explicit, differently-styled connector (a marked branch). An open gap forbids continuation; a marked bridge permits a labeled crossing while still denying the automatic one.
  • Interruption count — how many breaks a field carries. Enough to prevent every dangerous false link; too many and the layout shatters into disconnected fragments the eye cannot traverse at all.

When it helps, and when it misleads

Its strength is guarding against the archetype's most dangerous failure — the false whole. A well-placed interruption stops the eye from reading a smooth trend across missing data, from treating a destructive action as the next step in a flow, or from bundling unrelated items into a spurious group. It is the discipline that keeps persuasive continuity honest.

Its failure mode is over-interruption and its opposite, suppression. Too many breaks fragment a field so badly that no legitimate continuation survives and the eye cannot move at all; too few, or breaks too weak, let the false connection re-form. The classic misuse is the reverse abuse — removing a needed interruption so weak or unrelated evidence reads as one coherent causal sequence, exactly because the visual path was left seamless. The guarding discipline is to break only genuinely false links, mark each break so it reads as intentional, and validate with real viewers that the interruption stops the wrong reading without severing a right one.

How it implements the components

False-Continuation Interruption fills the boundary-and-branch components of the archetype:

  • interruption_and_branch_points — it is the mechanism's core: the deliberate cue breaks and branch markers that stop the eye where continuation would mislead.
  • group_membership_boundary — it enforces the negative side of grouping, cutting a shared cue so items that must not read as one set are perceptually separated; here the boundary breaks false membership rather than marking true membership.
  • scan_path_validation — it checks that viewers now halt or branch at the boundary and no longer perceive the false connection.

It does NOT implement continuation_cue_map or completion_gap_design — building the intended smooth route the eye follows is good_continuation_routing, and leaving a gap the viewer is meant to fill in is closure_based_completion; this mechanism's gaps exist to be *not crossed, the exact opposite of an invitation to complete.*
