Good-Continuation Routing lays down one continuous visual line — through collinear alignment, smooth curvature, and a steady heading — so that the eye, obeying the Gestalt law of good continuation, glides along that line from a deliberately chosen start anchor to a deliberately chosen destination.[1] Its defining move is that it builds an actual route the gaze travels: a path with a beginning, a direction, and an end. It is not a ranking of which element matters most, and it is not a trick that makes the depicted content look like it is moving — it is the smooth, unbroken track the eye prefers to stay on once it is on it. Everything the mechanism does serves keeping that one line from breaking where you want it followed.

Example

A regional transit authority is redrawing its subway map. A dozen lines cross the sheet, and riders complain they lose their line at interchanges. The designer's goal for the Blue Line is simple: an eye starting at the downtown terminus (the anchor) should slide all the way to the airport (the destination) without the gaze ever hopping onto a crossing line. So the Blue Line is straightened to a disciplined geometry of horizontals, verticals, and 45-degree diagonals; every turn is softened into a gentle arc rather than a sharp kink, because a hard angle is exactly where the eye jumps ship. At each interchange the Blue Line is drawn as the stroke that passes through smoothly, while the crossing line is the one that appears to bend away. A rider glancing at the map finds their eye already gliding station to station along the unbroken curve — they trace the whole route before they have consciously decided to. The map never labels "follow this"; the continuity does it.

How it works

  • Fix the two ends first. Name the anchor (where the eye should enter) and the destination (where it should arrive); the route only has meaning as a span between them.
  • Choose the dominant continuation cue. Collinearity and tangent-continuous curvature are the strongest pulls — the eye extrapolates a line in the direction it was already heading and resists direction changes.
  • Win the crossings. Where the route intersects other elements, draw your line as the one that continues smoothly and the other as the one that deviates; the smoother stroke is perceived as the continuing figure.
  • Kill the kinks. Replace abrupt angle changes with arcs, because a sharp corner is a break the eye reads as an endpoint.

Tuning parameters

  • Curvature smoothness — how gently the line bends. Smoother arcs pull the eye more reliably but eat layout space; tighter turns are compact but risk the gaze leaping off at the corner.
  • Alignment tolerance — how much positional jitter is allowed before elements stop reading as one line. Tight tolerance gives a crisp route; loose tolerance tolerates real-world placement but weakens the pull.
  • Crossing dominance — at each intersection, how strongly your route out-continues the competing line (via weight, unbroken stroke, or under-crossing). Higher dominance protects the path but can bury a genuinely important cross-route.
  • Simultaneous route count — how many continuous paths share the field. One route is unmissable; several begin to compete and dilute each other.

When it helps, and when it misleads

Its strength is wordless wayfinding: a well-routed line moves a viewer through a sequence faster than any arrow or caption, and it holds up under a fast, distracted glance. It is the right tool whenever an intended viewing order exists and you would rather the layout carry it than a legend.

Its failure mode is that the eye will loyally follow the smoothest line even when that line encodes the wrong relationship: an over-eager continuation can carry the gaze straight across an interchange into a route the reader never meant to take, and a designer who smooths a path between items that are not actually sequential manufactures a connection out of pure geometry. The classic misuse is drawing an elegant continuous curve through data points that have no continuous relationship, lending a seamless story to a discontinuous reality. The guarding discipline is to run an informal walkthrough with a couple of real viewers to confirm the route they trace is the route you meant, and to insert a deliberate break (see false_continuation_interruption) precisely where unbroken continuity would mislead.

How it implements the components

Good-Continuation Routing fills the path-laying components of the archetype and nothing else:

  • intended_perceptual_path — the routed line is the intended path; the mechanism's whole output is that traversable track.
  • start_anchor_and_destination — it explicitly picks the entry point and endpoint the route spans, since a continuation only means something between two ends.
  • continuation_cue_map — it supplies the alignment and smooth-curvature cues that pull the eye forward and resolves where they compete at crossings.

It does NOT implement figure_ground_contrast or microanimation_or_state_transition_hint — ranking elements by visual weight so the eye descends a salience gradient is attention_gradient_following; this mechanism lays a route, it does not sort by prominence.
