The Forensic Discriminator resolves an observational tie by reading the aftermath. It works when several candidate causes could produce the same gross outcome but each leaves — or fails to leave — a distinctive residue, mark, or signature as a byproduct of how it operates. The mechanism's defining move is to hunt for that tell: not to intervene, not to reframe, but to examine what the event already deposited and find the physical or logical trace that one candidate's mechanism would have left and the others' would not. Its whole leverage rests on the premise that different generators, even when their end products look identical, differ in their fingerprints. Every step — what was sampled, where, what it excludes — is logged into an evidentiary record with chain-of-custody, because the conclusion must survive later challenge. How it works

The discriminator starts from the preserved observation — the scene, artifact, or log — treated exactly as found, before any theory of the event is adopted, so the reading is not bent to a favored story. It asks, for each candidate generator, what byproduct would this mechanism leave that its rivals would not? — turning each candidate into a predicted signature. It then searches the aftermath for those signatures: the mark present that implicates one cause, or the mark conspicuously absent that excludes another. Presence and absence both carry weight — a clean scene where a candidate should have left a trace is itself discriminating. Throughout, it maintains an evidentiary record: what was examined, what was found, what each finding rules in or out, and what remains unresolved, so the resolution basis is auditable rather than asserted.

Tuning parameters

  • Trace sensitivity — how faint a signature the search is tuned to detect. High sensitivity finds subtle tells but raises the chance of reading noise as a mark.
  • Presence vs. absence weighting — how much an absent expected trace counts against a candidate, versus how much a present trace counts for one. Over-trusting absence risks convicting on a trace that was simply destroyed.

When it helps, and when it misleads

Its strength is that it can resolve a tie long after the event, with nothing to intervene on, whenever the generators differ in the traces they leave. A single diagnostic signature — an accelerant residue, a tool mark, a log entry only one code path writes — can be close to decisive, and the evidentiary record makes the finding defensible.

Its failure modes are traps of interpretation. The pseudo-discriminator is the worst: a trace is treated as pointing to one cause when in truth several candidates could have produced it — a mark that feels distinctive but is not actually unique to the favored story. Absence-as-proof is the mirror error: concluding a candidate is excluded because its expected trace is missing, when the trace was merely destroyed, never deposited, or missed.
