Friction or Salience Adjustment¶
Choice-architecture method — instantiates Associative Cue Redesign
Re-weights the effort and attention around existing options — adding friction to the old response, salience to the new — so the desired action becomes the path of least resistance without removing any choice.
Sometimes you want neither to remove a cue nor to install a new one — both options should stay — you just want the better one to be easier and more noticeable than the worse one. Friction or Salience Adjustment re-weights the two dials that decide which response wins in an automatic moment: friction (how much effort a response takes) and salience (how much attention it draws). Add a step to the old response, subtract steps from the new, brighten the desired option and mute the other, and behavior slides toward the path of least resistance. Its defining move is that it changes neither the set of options nor the cue that triggers them — only their relative cost and prominence — which is exactly what makes it the mechanism most in need of an explicit consent boundary.
Example¶
A savings app finds that users who mean to save keep tapping "Move to checking" on impulse. Both actions must stay fully available, so the design doesn't remove withdrawal — it re-weights. Salience goes up on the desired action: "Save" becomes the large, primary, one-tap button on the home screen. Friction goes up, mildly, on the impulse action: an instant withdrawal now takes one extra confirmation and offers a "get it tomorrow, no fee" option beside the immediate one.
Crucially, the friction is disclosed and proportionate — the app says it is adding a pause, and the money is still genuinely one confirmation away — because the same two dials, turned cynically, are exactly how a dark pattern traps someone. The result: impulsive moves drop while deliberate ones pass through untouched. No option was taken away; the easy path was simply pointed at the goal.
How it works¶
- Weigh the competing responses. Establish which response is currently easier and more salient in the triggered moment — usually the unwanted one, or it wouldn't be winning.
- Add friction to the old, subtract from the new. Insert a small effort or delay before the unwanted response and strip steps from the desired one, so the easy path flips.
- Rebalance attention. Make the desired response more prominent and the old one quieter — without hiding it — a shift of weight, not a removal of choice.
- Bound it with consent. Keep the change disclosed, proportionate, and reversible, so a nudge toward the goal never becomes a trap that serves the designer instead of the actor.
Tuning parameters¶
- Friction magnitude — how much effort or delay is added to the old response. Enough to interrupt the reflex; too much becomes an obstacle that breeds resentment or workarounds.
- Salience gap — how strongly the desired option is emphasized over the other. A wide gap moves more behavior but edges toward manipulation as the alternative dims.
- Disclosure — whether the actor is told the friction or emphasis is there. Transparency keeps it a nudge and not a trick, at some cost to raw effectiveness.
- Symmetry — whether you adjust one side (only ease the good option) or both (also impede the bad one). Two-sided adjustment is more potent and more paternalistic; match it to the stakes and the autonomy owed.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is that it shifts behavior while leaving every option on the table — nothing is banned, so autonomy is formally preserved and the change is gentle and reversible. Well-used, it is choice architecture: arranging how options are presented so the easy default serves the person choosing. It is the right tool when both responses must remain available and only their relative ease should change.
It misleads precisely because it is quiet. The same friction that protects can be weaponized as sludge — effort deliberately added to the option a designer dislikes, or salience used to exploit attention rather than inform it.[n1] Because it removes nothing, it can feel benign while steering hard, and run backward it manufactures a "preferred" choice and then calls the resulting behavior the user's own. The discipline is the consent boundary carried on the mechanism itself: disclose the adjustment, keep it proportionate to the stakes, keep the disfavored option genuinely reachable, and be most cautious where the actor is captive — a workplace, a public service, a vulnerable population.

Friction or Salience Adjustment realizes the choice-weighting side of the archetype — the components about relative ease and its ethical limits, not the cue or the response themselves:
