Friction Reduction¶
Process design — instantiates Elasticity-Based Leverage
Removes steps, waits, forms, confusion, travel, or effort from a desired action when evidence suggests small convenience gains produce large behavior shifts.
Friction Reduction finds the single point where a small amount of hassle is quietly blocking a large amount of wanted behavior, and takes the hassle away. It removes a step, a wait, a form field, a moment of confusion, a required trip — not everywhere, but at the specific choke point where people who already want to act are dropping out because the path is briefly annoying. Its defining move is locating the steep spot: mapping how completion changes as effort falls, so effort is stripped from the one place a tiny convenience gain unlocks an outsized shift, rather than smoothed uniformly across a process where most steps don't matter. This is the mirror image of adding a barrier to suppress action: here the action is desired and the friction is the only thing in its way. And because "we made it easier and more people did it" is exactly the pattern a background trend can fake, the mechanism's credibility rests on isolating the causal lift with a proper comparison rather than crediting the change with whatever the numbers happened to do next.
Example¶
An online tax-filing service sees most users abandon partway through signup. Rather than redesign the whole flow, the team maps the funnel step by step and finds one cliff: a single screen asking users to type a long account number from a paper letter, where nearly half of the people who reach it quit. That step is the steep spot — small in effort, enormous in dropout. They remove it by letting the number be scanned or auto-retrieved, and they prove the effect properly: half of new users get the streamlined screen at random, half get the old one, and completion is compared across the two arms over the same weeks. The streamlined arm converts far better, and because the split is randomized, the lift cannot be a seasonal filing-deadline surge or a marketing push — it is the removed friction. One tiny convenience change at the right point moved more behavior than months of persuasion aimed at the whole funnel.[n1]
How it works¶
The method is diagnosis before surgery. It maps the desired action as a sequence, measures where completion falls off, and reads the response curve — how much behavior returns per unit of effort removed at each candidate point — because most steps are flat (removing them changes nothing) and the leverage sits at one or two steep cliffs. It strips friction there, then proves the gain against a baseline: the honest test is not that completion rose but that it rose because of the change, which means a control group, an A/B split, or a clean before-and-after that nets out trend, seasonality, and publicity. Without that counterfactual, an unrelated tailwind gets miscredited as leverage and the next "obvious" simplification disappoints.
Tuning parameters¶
- Choke-point selection — how sharply the effort removal is aimed at the steepest drop-off versus spread across the whole flow. Precise aim buys the biggest lift per change; blanket smoothing dilutes effort onto steps that don't bind.
- Curve resolution — how finely the response-to-effort relationship is mapped before acting. Fine mapping finds the true cliff; a coarse read risks simplifying a step that was never the blocker.
- Counterfactual rigor — from a randomized A/B split down to a rough before-and-after. More rigor buys confidence the lift is causal; less is faster but easily fooled by a trend.
- Removal depth — how much of the step is stripped versus streamlined. Deep removal maximizes convenience but can drop a step that was doing quiet, necessary work (a check, a consent).
- Saturation watch — whether further simplification past the cliff is still adding completions or just cost. Beyond the steep point, more polishing returns little.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is enormous leverage for tiny effort: because a surprising amount of wanted behavior is held back by trivial hassle at one point, removing that one point converts far better than exhortation or incentives aimed at the whole population. It shines when the action is already acceptable to the user and only the path is in the way — the missed appointment driven by a confusing booking form, the abandoned checkout, the un-renewed benefit.
It misleads chiefly through false attribution: strip a step, watch completion rise, and credit the change when a deadline, a promotion, or a seasonal swing did the lifting — which is why a baseline and counterfactual are not optional here. It can also over-smooth, removing a step that was doing quiet necessary work, or keep polishing past the cliff where further simplification returns nothing. And it presumes the behavior is genuinely wanted; where it is not, removing friction just manufactures shallow action. The discipline is to map the curve and act only at the steep point, and to prove every claimed lift against a real comparison rather than against hope.
How it implements the components¶

It does not add a barrier to suppress an undesired action, and it runs no essential-needs screen on an imposed obstacle (fairness_and_essential_needs_review) nor gates itself on a behavior's barrier-sensitivity (elasticity_estimate) — that opposite move, adding friction to a behavior that is too easy, is its twin Friction Addition.
