Gratuitous Change Challenge¶
Review procedure — instantiates Minimal-Change Counterfactual Construction
Makes every alteration in the counterfactual justify itself, striking any change the antecedent did not entail.
The Gratuitous Change Challenge is an adversarial review that takes a proposed counterfactual, enumerates every way it differs from the actual world, and forces each difference to earn its place. Its defining orientation is negative: where a preservation check certifies what was kept, this procedure interrogates what was changed. For each alteration it demands a warrant — is this the stated antecedent, or a consequence the antecedent entails, or neither? — and it strikes every change that is neither, then re-checks whether the conclusion still stands in the stripped-down world. It records each strike so the pruning is auditable. It does not compute which changes are entailed (it consumes that verdict) and it does not certify the preserved facts; its job is to delete the smuggled changes that make a counterfactual convenient.
Example¶
A strategy team reviews a competitor's confident retrospective claim: "if we had entered the streaming market in 2016 instead of 2019, we would have become the category leader." The Gratuitous Change Challenge enumerates every difference bundled into that seemingly-single antecedent. "Entered in 2016" is the stated edit — legitimate. But the winning narrative silently also assumes the company's later, larger content budget would have been available three years earlier (it would not have — the firm was smaller then); that consumer broadband penetration matched 2019 levels (it did not); and that the incumbent would simply not have responded. Each of these is a change to an actual fact that "enter earlier" does not entail. The challenge strikes all three and re-poses the world: enter in 2016 with 2016's actual budget, market, and a responsive incumbent. In that minimal world the conclusion "category leader" no longer follows. The procedure's whole value is making the smuggled changes visible and requiring their deletion before the claim is believed.
How it works¶
- Enumerate every difference. Lay out each way the proposed counterfactual departs from the actual world — the full modification trace, not just the headline edit.
- Demand a warrant per change. For each difference ask: is it the stated antecedent, entailed by it (per the audit), or unwarranted?
- Strike the unwarranted. Delete every change that is neither the antecedent nor entailed by it.
- Re-test the conclusion. Re-examine whether the claim survives once the gratuitous changes are gone.
- Log each strike. Record what was removed and why, so the pruning is auditable and applied evenhandedly.
Tuning parameters¶
- Challenge severity — how strong a warrant each change must show. High severity enforces strict minimality; too high, and genuinely entailed changes get wrongly struck.
- Scope — whether every difference is challenged or only outcome-relevant ones. Full scope is thorough; targeted scope is faster but can miss a load-bearing smuggle.
- Burden placement — guilty-until-justified versus neutral. Placing the burden on the change is what makes the procedure bite.
- Reviewer stance — self-review versus an adversarial third party. An outside challenger catches self-serving changes a proponent will not.
- Logging depth — how fully each strike is recorded. Fuller logs make the pruning contestable and repeatable.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is that it kills the cherry-picked counterfactual by forcing minimalism: it is the operational form of the maxim of minimum mutilation — accommodate the antecedent by changing as little else as possible.[n1] By making each change justify itself, it prevents a narrow "if X" from quietly importing a whole favorable world.
Its failure mode is over-zealous or asymmetric striking. Removing a change the antecedent genuinely entails leaves an incoherent world; applying harsh scrutiny to the disfavored side while waving through your own preferred changes turns the procedure into a rhetorical weapon. The classic misuse is exactly that selective severity — deploying the challenge only against conclusions you dislike. The discipline that keeps it honest is to apply the same warrant standard to every candidate and to route "is this entailed?" to the entailment audit rather than settling it by taste, so a struck change is struck on the record, not on preference.
How it implements the components¶
gratuitous_change_filter— its core operation: the warrant-and-strike rule that deletes every change the antecedent neither is nor entails.modification_trace_record— it enumerates and logs every difference and its adjudication, leaving an auditable record of what was struck and why.
It attacks changes but neither certifies nor computes.
